I have two modems. The U.S.Robotics56K FaxmodemPCI for windows(model-5699B) is very fast (5.2k sec download speed) if I use the driver windows loads for it but unstable. Not only does it disconnect a-lot but every time I restart or shutdown I get an error that says some usrb dll failed to initialize because the windows station is shutting down.If I use the usr driver Its less than half as fast.(2.3k sec download speed)but I get no errors. The other modem is a cheap intel 56k modem that windows wont auto load a driver for but using its driver it also is very slow.2.2-3.2k sec.Ive even tried the modem settings juno recomends but to no avail.Anyone know of a good modem or a fix.Cant get broadband either.

Mmmm yeah sort of.

I'd try limiting your modems speed because more than likely whats happening is its getting connection errors and dropping itself down to 28.8 speeds.

Until I started limiting my connection to a lower speed I had problems like that a lot, at least with regards to the speed.

USR should have firmware upgrades as well as drivers, also.

Could it be your ISp or whomever it is you are connecting to at the other end has just cut back or isnt bothering to support their dial in folks at the other end?

I know a few ISPs in the Uk that are shutting down their modem services.
