Why not have the ability to seach in topics only?
For instance I would like to search for all topics related to A8N-E.
Results are more limited, pertinent and easier to browse with only related topics. |

| I'm not sure I follow - you mean search within particular threads? That isn't a feature of the phpBB forum. |

Search topic title and message text
Search message text
These are the current options.
I would like to search topic titles only. This is available on most forums.
This yields a smaller number of hits, but hits that are usually more useful to my questions. Also the returns are easier to read quickly and find out if they relate to the information I'm seeking. And then you've got all the replies to that topic that are then easily reviewed.
When you get so many returns from message text, you have to do alot more reading and hunting through each message to see if it's useful. Then you have to go back to the topics and search those replies.
Does this make sense? |

Yes, makes sense now For some reason, searching by 'topic title only' isn't supported by phpBB. There is a mod out there which allows those type of searches but it doesn't currently incorporate phpBB's latest sec updates. As soon as it does I'll add it to the forum.
If you're searching for a particular subject it's quite easy to narrow down the results by adding more words to the search - eg, " A8N-E RAID etc ." |

Here's my thought:
I just bought the A8N-E motherboard. The first search I want to do will be for almost anything related to the board, so a topic search would be the best to start off with. You get too many hits with messages. The other forums would give me the topic hits, say 10 or 50, but those topics are easy to scan and pick out which ones to follow up on.
Then I can search A8N-E RAID, or A8N-E sound, etc.
Thanks for your time and concern! |

One thing I find useful sometimes is to view the results as posts. On the search page, look in the bottom left corner:
Display results as: Posts x Topics o
The default is to just show the results as topics, if you select Posts you can view the searchword in context with the the thread it was found in. |

If you go to www.avsforum.com and do a search for 2405fpw (my new Dell screen).
If you search titles/topics I get 20 good hits and real easy to scan.
By doing it titles + message I get 120. And harder to scan.
I typically do the title seach 1st, then your way if mine doesn't yield much.
See what you can do.
Thanks for your help! |
