Dabs have the OCZ core SSDs on pre-order @ £109 inc for the 32Gb versions, which is sorely tempting me to get 2 and stripe them. For not far off the price of a 300Gb VRaptor .. and maybe @ around 200 MBs read / 150MBs write of silent < 4ms access time it could make me drool.. early xmas present methinks Very Happy .

For years now, the market has shunned Solid State tech because of bang v buck and (imo) some insider 'politics' that prevented products like the iRam from evolving properly (DDR2 controller, Sata300, PciE interface etc).. now that a 'big' player like Samsung are promising their 'own' fast cost effective MLC SSDs in addition to OCZ , others will surely follow. This will bring the price down even further and not only compete with the Raptors, but replace them as affordable boot drives at least. Last I checked the Velociraptor could manage between 100-110 MBps sustained Read/Writes and between 6.5-7.5 Access times for around £200.00. 2x OCZ Core 32s on a non Intel Raid Controller promise to be a lot quicker (maybe between 180-200MBps read/140-160 MBps write/less than 1sec Access time!!) and totally silent for around the same price. Enthusiasts will soon jump on this bandwagon and it won't be long before the mainstream Desktop market will join the Mobile one in taking SSD on board.

The last 12 months have seen a 50% price drop with OCZ's Core introduction.. and now Samsung are promising similar (if not identical Wink ) product introduction.. this is a big big deal for the Storage and wider Computing Industry.. and very very good news for enthusiasts.

Fwiw.. UK based etailers already jumping on the 'pre-order' bandwagon, have some notable price variatons:

Once a few more 'favourable' reviews take place OCZ could get a good head start on any significant 'jump' to affordable SSD. A lot depends on their capacity to produce large volumes quickly.

What I am now pretty sure of, is that the realworld 'enthusiast' move to Solid State is about to start..

Flash SSD Update: More Results, Answers : An Apology First – And One New SSD To Prove Us Right
...
The truth is that no general conclusion, such as “Flash SSDs are more efficient,” can be drawn at this point for the majority of the Flash SSDs on the market. Performance, efficiency and performance per watt typically depend on the specific workload, and some hard drives are surprisingly efficient in certain disciplines.

Yeah it's just a peek though, but I think in real world usage the OCZ Core is going to have the edge, the seek time of SSD's makes a huge difference.

Greetings!

How I figured out my OCZ Core 64GB SSD

a $275 64GB SATA2 SSD with Reads up to 120-143MB/sec and Writes up to 80-93MB/sec with a seek time less than .35ms? That’s what OCZ claims, and that is what got my interest, but I soon realized it wasn’t so straightforward.
