Will we ever get useful NCQ support?

Postby mad_arab » Sat Jul 16, 2005 6:52 pm

Most have probably realized that NCQ can't be enabled on nforce drivers without causing data corruption. I wonder what is the current status, and if we ever can count on Nvidia to work this out. I would very much like to be able to use this feature.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this issue has been resolved with the Nforce4 chip. I have the Nforce3 and NCQ is not and never will be supported. I have tried enabling it with very horrendus results. Deleting whole partitions being the worse. I like pain and missery...especially when "NCQ" is enabled by default on ALL Nforce drivers after 5.10. WTF was Nvidia thinkin about "backward compatibility"??

NCQ is not supported on nforce3, only TCQ. Which, yes, didn't work stable either...

So you're saying it should be safe to enable it on my NF4? I tried earlier this year, and the result was massive file corruption. Because the search function here is botched I'm not able to find that thread though. But I want to be 100% sure the specific problem is resolved before enabling it again.

You need an up-2-date BIOS, drivers and eventually HDD firmware.
What drive, mobo, drivers etc. do you have/are you using?
Heck, I'd be totally p|ssed if an advertised feature such as NCQ wouldn't work...

From what I've heard, TCQ doesn't help at all performance-wise. In fact it degrades it...
NCQ behaves a tad better and shows a slight perf increase but only in multi-user benchmarks that simulate multiple read/write request to the HDD which is untypical in desktop situations. Thus you won't notice a difference unless you're using your comp as a database-server and edit huge images in Photoshop at the same time...

I have a A8N-SLI (non-deluxe), bios 1010.2
Official 6.66 NF4 AMD drivers (IDE 5.34)
3 S-ATA drives:
WD Raptor 74Gb
Seagate 7200.8 400Gb
WD Caviar 400Gb

Gonna read through those articles now, thanks.[/b]
