Hi 2nd post. Forgive any mistakes.
I'm browsing the forums for a particularly vexing solution to a problem that I thought was common on nForce4 boards.
I just did a major upgrade from my ECS 755-A2 based machine, and I'm sortof an idiot because I didn't do SysPrep. I just turned the machine off and swapped the new parts(listed in my sig) and expected WinXP to do the rest. Wrong. WinXP did load up as before, but there were several devices not properly installed: the chipset, a pci bridge device, the audio controller, the Ethernet controller, and SM... thingy? Normally not a problem since I have the drivers on CD, but my CD drive is having issues properly reading CDs. It takes WAY long to explore a CD, the read-light indicator just "blips" at regular intervals, and most files can't be executed or copied. Some CDs, like the WinXP service pack2 CD, are simply detected as blank discs!
My process in chronological order:
-Re-install winXP from scratch (note: in the DOS-like install environment, CD functions just fine.)
-Tried to use an Ethernet connection from a router to dl drivers (instead of Wi-Fi) but the Ethernet Controller is not installed. Damn.
-Got a USB flash drive and dl-ed drivers elsewhere. Successfully installed here. After some time, all systems restored to operational, according to the Device Manager.
Everything works now except the CD Drive. Still having the same problem. I know that there is nothing physically wrong with the drive because it worked just fine on my socket 754 machine. The reason why I thought this was a common problem is because I had a friend who upgraded to an nForce4 a while back and he had the exact same problem (don't know how he fixed it, and I can't get ahold of him... assuming he'd remember anyway.) The drive spins... blips... then very excrutiatingly slow performance.
I will duplicate this post in the nforce4 thread. In the meantime, I'll be looking for posts relevent to this problem (there are many threads throughout these forums!!).
Thanks for your time.
EDIT: Problem solved by myself. For the record, I had to:
--Control Panel
--System
--Device Manager
+-IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
+--NVIDIA nForce4 Parallel ATA Controller
=-select 'Properties'
Secondary Channel (my CDROM drive was on Slave2)
-Uncheck "Let BIOS select transfer mode"
-Select "PIO Mode" (...on a hunch, correct me if this is a stupid move)
