Just built up a new system for a friend and have the following problem.
It has a WD 320 sata hard drive and 2 Pioneer 215 sata dvd drives installed on a Gigabyte GA-M68SM-S2L motherboard running an AMD 5000+ CPU, 2 Gig Kingston DDR2 ram and XP pro SP2.
Installed XP fine from one of the drives but then my problems began.
The system recognises both optical drives but when they are accessed for either reads or writes the system freezes and even the task manager won't end the problem. A shutdown via the power switch is the only option.
Is there something I have missed doing in the setup?
Have tried the following: upgraded the boards BIOS, installed the latest NVIDIA drivers from the Gigabyte site, tried a drive in another PC and it works fine, tried different sata sockets on the m/board, even tried a IDE dvd drive and it worked just fine.
Any ideas??

PSU problem?
Shouldn't be. Brand new Coolermaster Centurion TO5 case with supplied PSU. Running just on-board graphics.

@allegro
Have you solved that problem? If yes, how?

I'm having the same problem on a GA-M68SM-S2. Maybe it's a bios problem. I think it's a bios problem but I can't find anywhere the latest beta after F2 official release. Anyone has it?

Tried the latest Bios update and the nForce drivers recommended on this forum but to no avail. Have a PC with a ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard and had no problems with the 2 SATA burners in that. It recognized them as 2 removable items of hardware (same as the SATA hard drive)
A friend who had a similar problem reckons he got around it by entering the SATA drivers with F6 prior to installing the operating system. Then configured the DVD drives as JBOD. A bit beyond my understanding so didn't try it.
Solved the problem by using 2 IDE DVD burners instead.!
Still bugs me that I couldn't find a solution.
Hope someone else comes up with something:)

Cheers

I am, rather was, in the same situation. Try the following to get your pioneer drive working.
Go to device manager, expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Select the IDE controller corresponding to your optical drive and right click, go to properties. Click on advanced settings tab and change "transfer mode" to PIO only. Click OK and your drive should work just fine.

Thanks for that idea. My friend is happy with the 2 IDE drives I ended up installing to get around the problem. If he's happy for me to have a "fiddle" I'll give it a go with the 2 SATA drives.
Cheers, John
