|
|
|
I've been trying to install Unbuntu on my laptop tonight, and can't seem to get it to work. This is the error message I get:
| Quote: |
EMM386: Warning: Address line A20 already enabled.
Frame=D000 Kb=32768 |
After a little bit of research it seems to be something to do with the memory controller. I've looked in the BIOS for a setting reffering to the A20 that I could possibly toggle off...but came up with nothing. One site also suggested only running 1 gig of ram as a fix, but I only have 1 gig anyway.
Here are the specs on my laptop:
MSI 1029
AMD Turion 64 2.0ghz
1 gig of DDR400
60 gig HD (25 gig partition for Windows XP, was hoping to dual boot).
Any suggestions would be great!

EDIT: I'm trying to install Ubuntu, version 6.10 (it is x64).
- Would appear it has something to do with using Nero to burn the disc. I need sleep...I will try to reburn it tomorrow with another program, hopefully that helps.

Thanks for the response wardog. I'm currently not using a USB mouse or keyboard. I found this link, and it would seem to make sence. I'm heading out the door to go to work, but I'm bringing the laptop along, and I'm going to try to burn it again with a program other then Nero (anyone here ever use CDburnerXP pro?). I'll be in touch just as soon as I get a chance to give this a shot.
On a side note...using a cd-rw shouldn't be causing an issue...correct?
Thanks,

No, so long as the drive is compatable.
You are burning this ISO as an image and not as a bootable disc, right? If you're burning this a bootable disk in Nero this may happen.
Righ-click on ubuntu-6.10-desktop-amd64.iso, "Open with' > Nero Burning Rom > and Burn away. You might, using CD/RW's, have to unselect "Finalize Disc'
Or use vaiomans link or what I use for opening(burning) images, UltraISO.
The link you provide, that had to be a non-bootable image(ISO) to begin with as there would be absolutely NO reason to include Nero's boot-loader otherwise.

I used the link vaioman gave me, and I was able to burn the disc fine. I now have another issue though. I put the disc in, and reboot the laptop. It comes up with the Ubuntu screen with various options. First thing I did was have it run a test to make sure the disc was good, that checked out fine. After this I went to install. It starts doing stuff, and you see a green bar moving back and fourth. Eventually though, it gets to a point where the screen just goes black. At this point, ctrl, alt, del doesn't do anything, and I can't eject the disc. The only way to reboot is to force a shutdown (hold the power button).
Would I be right to assume it's a compatability issue with my chipset or gpu? The GPU is an Radeon X700. The chipset is the Radeon Xpress 200P.

haha! I had a feeling! Thanks anyway wardog.
After a quick look at the Ubuntu site...I've found it's rather difficult to find supported hardware lists. This is something they should work on! lol.
Well...I downloaded Gentoo last night as well...maybe I'll give that a go when I get home. I'll be honest...not really sure whats sparked this Linux thing...maybe just the desire for something new. haha.

hmmm, I'm not entirely sure why I didn't find those!
According to your second link there, the MSI MegaBook S270 is supported. Thats the only one though. I've checked around at various notebook forums, and it would appear the MSI 1029 can be some what of a pain. Then again there are people not having any issues at all. I guess it's going to depend on which distro I use. I had Suse 10.0 on it at one point, and that installed smooth as silk. I'm going to keep messing around and see if I can't figure something out.
