Greetings!

$99 Ouya wants to bust down console gaming’s walled gardens
Controller-equipped, Android-based system gives indies access to the TV.

Since the days of the great Atari crash, the history of game consoles has been one of increasingly powerful walled gardens. Massive companies exercise tight control over what games can be released on their platform, how often, and at what price. But that model is starting to look a little outdated. We live in a world where iOS is succeeding as a game platform with thousands of lightly regulated titles, where even hardcore games like Team Fortress 2 are making the free-to-play model work, and where PC developers often make more money when they control the price of their own games.

Those are the kinds of business developments that are motivating the team behind Ouya, a $99, Android 4.0-based TV game console project launching on Kickstarter today. Ouya is promising to provide a more open, hackable, and flexible gaming environment than the console market has ever seen before.

A Closer Look At The Ouya Reference Board

John Gatt, long time friend of the [H] and all around nice guy, has taken a closer look at the Ouya reference board that powers the recently Kickstarted Android based game console.

I spent over ten years working with chipset developers and have a good understanding of product development. What was shown in the video is what is referred to as a reference board; a board designed by the chipset manufacturer to allow potential customers to develop projects without having to produce their own mainboard first. A reference board will usually have all the possible chipset options on it but will not include extra chips like high end audio chips from Creative, or wireless network chips, or even high end USB controllers. Reference boards are developed specifically for technology development of features related to the chipset.

It seems kind of ironic. It's probably $50 worth of hardware so how it would really compete as a console boggles the mind.

As a computer I'm sure it's decent.

It may be $50 worth of Tegra 3 hardware, but it'll be more powerful than a Wii, and that still tends to do ok against the PS3/360... :P

Actually some Android games look quite visually impressive (thinking Shadowgun, Dead Trigger, Batman: TDKR, Dark Meadow, Dead Space, Shine Runner, Mass Effect etc) and already run at >720p resolutions, so it should hold up pretty well.

Tegra 3 soc probably costs $20-30. The RAM probably costs $20. If they have a hard drive that'll add a bit.

And yeah, I've seen those games. They don't look bad, but they don't look that good either.

And beating the Wii is not an accomplishment.

For the limitations it has to hit on the Android market (i.e. file size), I think the games look pretty good considering the lack of texture data space etc. If they were using similar data sizes to consoles the games would definitely look better, and having 1GB RAM is double the amount of the 360/PS3 too.

Graphically in raw grunt a Tegra 3 obviously isn't going to compete with 360/PS3, but it could come close enough depending on what type of game it is, if the extra storage was there.
