but still.. nVidia has operated the same way for years... a decade in fact. They push their hardware to the limit, knowing it won't last for the long haul. they essentially put BFG out of business because BFG couldn't survive the returns of the *i think* 400 series cards when BFG was offering lifetime warranty. The only cards I have ever seen fail personally, and this is coming from an IT person, is nVidia. I personally had a 6000 series card fail. I saw a massive problem with Dell 5200 series cards. (granted it was caps, but still)
I think nVidia has great PR and pays to get some great press, but the fact is if you want your money to last you buy ATI/AMD
nVidia is like that Honda Civic with the engine swap you see on Craigslist. yeah it runs great for a while, and has tons of horsepower, but then a couple months later you're thrown a rod and you're putting a new engine in.

I'm pretty sure my 4850 failed the exact moment I took it out of my system and stopped using it. The smell seemed awfully familiar, at any rate.

I beg to differ, apart from a few dodgy mobile GPU's they made that had an issue with the substrate, they've been very reliable for me over the years. I've still got cards over a decade old running in some machines at work, and I personally run folding@home 24/7 on a GTX 9800GTX+, a GTX 285, a GT 240, and a GTX 560Ti, three generations of cards all running at the limit and still working fine.

I think AMD & Nvidia have had roughly equal failure rates over the years, some cards will just fail, no matter who makes them.
