Somehow I doubt the 5970 will be faster than the 6990. Someones got their head up their ass.

I'm pretty sure he mean/said the HD 6970 and not the HD 6990, it would be a minor disaster if the Antilles 6990 ended up slower than the 5970.

Lots of fud information going around anyway, but then again AMD have been putting 'Slow Speed Board' models of Cayman out there!? (Zoom on that green sticker!)

Leaked 3DMark11 bench for the 6970? :-

Not as quick as hoped then, but it could be immature drivers...

I think something is wrong. Even my modest setup snaps at its heels.

Maybe they are following nvidias testing rules and only using a PCI-E 4x slot

Nope, that's about right, 3DMark11 scales pretty damn well with Crossfire, run it with a single card and you'll see the difference!

Well I'm a bit suspect of 3DMark11.

Seems to vary wildly in its results.

First run was set to stock speeds and got a score of 4239. Stated I had a 720 X3 CPU.

Second run was OC'd to my normal speeds and scored 4498, Stated I had a 720 X3 CPU.

Set the cards back to stock, ran the demo mode for performance and scored 4589! Stated I had a Phenom X4 CPU.

I did notice the physics benches ran several frames faster in the demo mode.

The OC'd back to normal -

My setup is now faster than a Phenom X6 with a 6970. Hmmmm buggy maybe. :?

I'm not denying that it's probably got bugs, but your scores are still within the range of what they should be, run with a single card and you'll get ~25xx points or so, just as you'll see up to 4 or 5 thousand points with 2x HD 5770's ( http://3dmark.com/3dm11/7384 for example) though I guess there is more variability in the results of multi-GPU setups.

A stock HD 5870 scores about 41xx or 42xx depending on what CPU you pair it with, a pair of HD 5870's are about 7xxx or so, if a HD 6970 is getting 49xx then it's still a fair improvement over a HD 5870 with less cores (1536 vs 1600), just not quite enough to match the Fermi's.

AMD Radeon vs NVIDIA GeForce: Last Stand for Graphics :-

Based on Catalyst driver 8.790.6.2000 (8.79.6.2 RC2) given to press, the Radeon HD 6970 delivers approximately the same performance as NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 570. Recently launched at the $350 price point, the GeForce GTX 570 and Radeon HD 6970 go back and forth between tests but at no point does the Radeon HD 6970 ever approach GeForce GTX 580 performance levels.

http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?o ... 7&Itemid=8

Another confirmation that the HD 6970 falls short of the GTX 580, at least with the initial drivers.

Not a disaster I think for AMD (hey, the power consumption/noise/thermals might be better...), but Nvidia must be comfortably breathing a sigh of relief I reckon, and they can just play around with the pricing of the GTX 570...
