Temp question.

Postby -RYknow » Wed Jul 28, 2010 12:39 am

Hey guys, was just looking for some second opinions on the temps I'm getting on my new i7 build.

Specs:
CPU: i7-860
Mobo: Asus Maximus III Forumla
Ram: 4gb Gskill RipJaws (ddr3-2000)
GPU: XFX Radeon 5850
PSU: Corsair 620watt modular
HD's: 1x WD Raptor X (os'es), 1x WD 1TB (storage)
Cooling: Thermalright "TRUE" ultra 120 w/ push-pull fan setup.

My main question is temps with my current OC. We have an ambient temp of roughly 28C. My current OC settings are...

Vcore - 1.175v
RAM - 1.55v
All other voltages are set to auto.
Bus speed - 165
Multi - x21
Core Speed 3.471ghz.

I just ran LinX for 10 passes, and I had temps toping out at 75C-70C-73C-70C. Just wondering if these temps are too high? I've read that LinX is going to really stress the machine and give the highest temps, so in theory these temps should be as high as it gets with this current configuration.

Thanks for any input.

EDIT: My idle temps are 39C-39C-40C-37C. Also, I do have HT enabled.

Those temps seem a but high. Also if you Maximus Formula is anything like my Rampage formula you need to get all settings off auto while overclocking! Asus boards love to overvolt. Just from raising my FSB 10 mhz the bios will automatically raise my chipset and vcore by .2 volts.. even though it doesn't need it. Could be where some of your high temps are if voltages like PLL and stuff are being raised when they don't need to be.

What would be a good "stock" voltage for the PLL, and IMC? I read somewhere that Intel claims the IMC should be no higher then 1.2v. Last night I set the IMC voltage to 1.15v.

My goal is the highest OC I can get with lower then stock vcore (1.24v I believe?), and safe temps.

I would just start all the voltages at stock and see where you can go. On my board whenever I select a voltage setting on the right hand side it says what the normal voltage is. Not sure if yours is like that. I really don't know what the voltages are for your setup so sorry I can't help you with that. I just know my board, and my friends maximus formula (original), both overvolted the crap out of our stuff on auto settings, and I was able to overclock farther once I got everything off auto.

My overclock in sig is all at stock voltages. Everything on auto I couldn't get past 3.4ghz.
