Re: A7N8X-VM Boot Hang

Postby harb247 » Tue Jul 29, 2008 8:29 pm

Hi,

Just tried updating an Asus A7N8X-VM mother board BIOS to the most recent version and it gets pass the POST but just as its about to boot it hangs.

Need to verify if anybody else has this problem or how to over come this?

I can re flash the Bios using Alt +F2 with a floppy and using the flash file named A7N8X-VM.rom

I have also tried all the versions on the Asus web site and all of the mobo A7N8X-VM / 400

I have tried every setting i can think of and cant find the correct one. Just need to get it to the most recent version that works. Preferably with the memory support of Dual channel.

Yes i have even used the boot menu and selected my cd drive as the boot source.

I disabled quick boot and disable the manufacture logo so i can watch the post which it executes perfectly.

Then i can see it display the table of settings and then it says booting in 10 seconds or press escape. I let it time out to boot and pressed escape but it just hangs with no activity on anything.

Can anybody with this board verify what version they are running and where i can get that from?

Need to get this dealt with urgently. This is no need to buy a new chip or a new board if i can do everything except boot which i could possibly fix.

Either there was a setting my manufacturer set that i have not or there is a problem with the BIOS. There have been other reports of a boot hang on the latest version but no working solution for me..

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I tried booting from, CD, hdd, floppy and none of them worked.

The CD drive doesnt even spin up to sound like its being accessed it just halts at this point.

I dont have the original BIOS version. I been through so many different versions i cant even remember which one i had. I think it was 1004 anyway which i was unable to find anywhere on the web.

A7N8X-VM

and

A7N8X-VM /400

Hi,

Yes i moved the clear CMOS jumper and removed the battery and power cord.

System had reported that both the clock time and CMOS settings had been reset and to Reload BIOS defaults or enter setup options.

I did this every time i Flashed the new BIOS.

The reason for trying the /400 was that there was a reply on Asus forum about somebody using the /400 BIOS and got it into a working state but that hasnt worked for me.

Minor update:

Removed the Graphics card and used the on board card. Now when ready to boot the screen goes all multi color. Not sure if any boot during this time.

Is NE one still replying to this thread? I have a similar issue with my VM/400 board, except now I get a post code and no boot screen. It's started similar to his, could this be Bios related?

The post code is not in any records I have found. It's a 2 long beeps 6 short. The closest I've seen to this is 1 long, 9 short. I would much rather fix this computer, than to run my brothers old A7N8X-LA HP board. The Integreted video card no longer renders 3D generated graphics on a known game it could run before.

The Setup is:
A7N8X-VM/400 Rev2.1
250watt Bestec,(sorry, the good PSU is on my 2008HP A6600Z CTO)
Memory is 2x512MB Dual Channel (Spectek, Vdata)
AMD 3000+Barton (333FSB)
Removed Geforce 4MX 64MB AGP 8x with no avail
Tried booting with no hard drive.
Green Light funtions as normal.
When CMOS is clear and power returned, the Power button light comes on too.

I would be more than willing to buy a Bios chip already flashed for this board. It was always a good MB, just didn't play my games fully.

Checked for all three, nothing... this is why I think the Bios is currupt. right before it quit, I had issues with the Cmos Check sum, and Every time I wanted to turn it on, Cmos had to be cleared, like it wasn't shutting down properly. I did do the latest Bios Update to the MB, but it had no issues for 6 months afterwards. Not until I installed a Antec EA380 Earthwatts PSU on it, of course those power supplys do not have a sufficient -5volt rail on it to supply S3 susspend, so that was turned off in Bios and the jumpers set appropriately.

It's a Ebay buy computer, so the little bit of time I got with it is cool enough, just hoping to revive it so I can give it to my little sister.
