Windows 7 WEI Scores

Postby powerarmour » Thu Mar 19, 2009 4:19 pm

Just a thread for our Windows 7 WEI scores, especially as the hardware points go up to 7.9 now instead of 5.9.

Here's mine on build 7057 x64, with nothing overclocked/as is :-

[I don't know why I was unable to upload a screen shot to imageshack or other image hosts, so no pic.]

Windows 7 build 7000, under VirtualBox (only one CPU core, 1.5GB of RAM) yields the following:

Processor: 3.5
Memory: 4.2
Graphics: 1.0
G.Graphics: 1.0
HDD: 5.9

Not too bad, I'd say, especially the HDD score :). The system is actually quite usable, screen redraws and other "graphically intensive" operations (moving/resizing/minimzing windows, for example) are the only (obvious) issues.
No sig due to budget cuts.

If your vidcard and proc automatically adjust for heat that would explain that.

I've never felt these scores are of any practical value whatsoever. :|

I'm sure a better benchmarking tool would be more useful.....err for something?

They are if apps actually check them for their autoadjusting, but I haven't seen any that do.

I have apps on my laptop adjust to Very High Texture Detail or sommat on a machine with 128 megs video RAM...which is just mind bogglingly stupid when the apps 'require' 256 megs.

As Seawolf said they are there so apps can automatically adjust if they support the feature. Plus it's a set of numbers for idiots to understand when it comes to buying software/games that need higher minimum requirements than a WEI score of 3.0 or something to run adequately.

But apart from that I think they a fairly decent reference figures (the WEI in Windows 7 is anyway...) so you can gauge roughly what kind of performance you are likely to see in the OS itself, in many ways this is a benchmark of the 'OS' rather than any app that runs on it.

Currently toying with:
Tyan Thunder S2927
1x Opteron 8347 HE 55W 1.9GHz
2GB ECC DDR2 PC5300
Samsung HDD
Onboard XGI Volari Z7 (pitiful)

This is probably my first build in the last 3-4 years that actually uses an Nvidia chipset, a welcome return to nforcershq.
