hide the cables behind the motherboard, behind the case internals, dont have many cables in the first place....
many different methods but consider these 3 things:
1) why do you want to? for the sake of it, to get epeen off forums?
2) how much time do you want to spend doing it (you can spend a LONG time doing a custom job)
3) what will you gain? what will you lose? you mention about holding heat, there is also the potential problem when you fire it up if 1 connection is shorted, a risk you dont have if you dont mess with the cables.
i did a nice job on my system before (all IMO). might post some pics up (this was a basic job with the goal of "doing it nicely as i built it, nothing fully custom, just wanted it to be tidy and not take a long time".
hope that helps

I find the longer you stare at the inside of a case the more options come to mind. Often when you start trying to put the cables away more options appear.
"Hold on, what if I put that back there and that round there...ahaaaaaaa!"
I tend to tuck SATA cables under the motherboard and the 4 pin power often gets tucked under as it runs along the top.
I just tend to try to keep them out of the way for airflow rather than asthetics. Not having IDE cables has been a big boon. Plus using the Akasa SATA cables help cos they have a retention clip on them that allows more daring angles without them falling out.

One thing I like to do is to reverse the hard drive. In most cases the power/sata end sticks out near the motherboard. If you reverse it, you can directly route the power end to it without ever seeing it, and the sata can be routed to the small bundle of wires that must be seen. I can't be bothered to go to the effort that this guy has, but it's the best work I've seen (at least, posted in a 'guide' of sorts) to date. http://www.yougamers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=453
