No Palm Pre thread?

Postby thegrommit » Wed Jan 14, 2009 4:08 am

engadget and arstechnica seem to love it.

I particularly like the ability to merge ones contacts list and calendar onto one device without having to touch the sources. The threaded conversation across multiple modes is cool too. The only downside is the lack of a Palm desktop as I think it's a superior PIM to Outlook.

Engadget have put up their review Part 1.

Short version, it's generally great, though "Synergy" (the merging of contacts) could do with some polish.

If you think there should be a thread, you post one. That's about it.

I like the sound of it but I don't need a smartphone. Hell, I don't even need a cellphone right now.

They've definitely done a good thing in sticking the A8 Cortex CPU in there, which is a fair bit pokier than the ARM 11's in the iPhone (except the 3GS) and the current Android phones.

As for the OS itself, it looks superb, but whether it'll get the extra application support to compete with the other two will be something to watch out for I guess. But I do like the hardware, very nice...

My friend has one but the wall charger he got with it wasn't working, so once he figured that out he plugged it into a PC to charge and it worked, but I was there when it was dead so didn't get a chance to check it out. Ah well :)

Arstechnica have put up Part 2 of their review.

Users who are already wonderfully served by Apple's portable should probably not bother with the Pre. But if you're like me and you felt that the iPhone, even in its post-MobileMe incarnation, never quite made sense as an Internet- and cloud-centric messaging device, then the Pre may be the answer to your prayers.

Part 1 sets the context for the device.
