Laptops

Postby dncyourdnc17 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:42 am

I'm just about to buy my first laptop computer but i'm having a little trouble finding the right one. i was wondering if i could get a little insight from all you computer savee people out there. i'm not able to afford anything over about $1,500. i'm also looking for somthing powerful, with lots of memory and overall good preformance. i'm kinda into programs like photoshop 7.0 and graphic design stuff...but i'm really not sure if that would have any part in the picking out of the notebook. i really dont know how specific i can get with somthing under1500 but if anyone has some ideas for me that'd be awesome!! thanks :D

I love mine, I got an Asus G1S, it has a lot of options usually seen on only 2k+ laptops

2.2ghz
2gb ram
8600m GT 256mb ddr3

if you look at the sony vaio brands, or similiar you'll see them trying to pack in processors below 2ghz for laptops below $1500

my first laptop, I'm pretty satisfied, rock solid construction nice screen, good performance, quiet, 2 hour battery life / 6.8 pounds for my ideal portability and perfromance

my only complains would be the hard drive isn't the most silent brand on the market (hitachi) but for $1300 open box it was a deal, also the speakers that come with it are really poor.

Just make sure it has a 7200rpm harddrive. I'd take that over CPU. If not then buy a 7200rpm drive and swap out/clone the 5400rpm standard one.

Has made the biggest difference on all the laptops I've had or upgraded for folks in the past.

Weight is another factor. That 17" beauty make look fab but the novelty wears off when its hanging on your shoulder day in and day out. Keep it as much under 3kg as you can.

I have used Samsung laptop drives and yes they are quiet.

I have to admit however, that I dont tend to worry about HD noise, its how quick it boots that matters to me.

Its just faster. Using laptops with 5400rpm/4200rpm drives (yes they still crop up) just redefine the definition of tedious. I had a modern laptop that had a 4200rpm drive in it and even fully defragged with a freshbuild took nearly 3 mins to boot. Even with the best CPU built in, it gets pretty boring very quickly.

You wouldnt put a 5400rpm drive in your main PC so why have one in a laptop?
