It may have once dismissed the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) Project as a "cheap gadget," but Intel appears to have changed its mind. The company is now involved in talks to provide CPUs for the $100 (actually ~$175) systems.

Although its aim was to bring the price down, the organization behind the so-called "$100 laptop" is moving further away from its goal. The One Laptop Per Child Foundation said the device, now known as the XO Laptop, will now cost about $188.

With pre-orders of the OLPC to governments lagging, it seems that you can now buy your very own XO…but there’s a catch. You must buy two $188 laptops, you get one and the other goes to a child in a poor country.

Sounds just the thing for what it was designed for.

If they bought out a more 'adult' orientated version would make the perfect standard home internet terminal for all those folks over a 'certain' age.

You know like your parents and grandparents. The only servicing required might be a full OS flash every three years. Heaven!

In related news, the OLPC project is considering the use of cows to provide power for the laptops in India. In a mailing list post, Arjun Sarwal of OLPC India describes how the cow-powered generator that is being developed by OLPC. "We plan to drive a dynamo (taken from an old Fiat) through a system of belts and pulleys using cows/cattle," wrote Sarwal. Citing the lack of water sources, consistent sunlight, or strong wind, Sarwal decided to use cattle, since they are present in great abundance in India. "The solution is of course not a one-for-all solution, but is an example of how locally available mechanisms can be leveraged to charge the laptops."

After delays, price increases, and a whole lot of hype, the One Laptop Per Child foundation's XO laptop has finally hit mass production, according to a report by DigiTimes.
...
The "Give 1 Get 1" program will kick off on November 12 via the laptopgiving.org website. The program will involve getting users to pony up $399 for a system, thereby purchasing an XO laptop for both themselves and a child in the developing world. DigiTimes says the offer will run until November 26, and Mary Lou Jepsen stated last month that laptops will be shipped out on a "first come, first served" basis.

Microsoft and Intel derailed the OLPC

NICHOLAS Negroponte's OLPC has been derailed by the machinations of the glorious Wintel alliance, claims the Wall Street Journal.

The article said that only 2,000 students in pilot programs have received computers from the One Laptop project and the only solid order has come from Uruguay for 100,000 machines.

This is because Intel and Microsoft have been working against the plan because they feel threatened, the paper shouts.
