Prime Sierpinski Project Info

Postby j3pflynn » Thu Apr 27, 2006 11:00 pm

Prime Sierpinski Project (PSP)-
The Prime Sierpinski project (PSP) is a mathematical project involved in the search of large prime numbers. Prime numbers are numbers, which are divisible by 1 and by themselves and not by any other numbers. It has been proved that there are an infinite number of prime numbers but no one has been able to prove anything about the distribution of prime numbers in general. It is a mysterious frontier of mathematics.

We look at a special class of prime numbers called proth numbers which have the general formula k*2^n+1. We further specialize our search by looking at numbers for which k is prime in k*2^n+1. Further more it has been proven that there exists an infinite number of prime k's such that k*2^n+1 can never be prime. These k's are called prime sierpinski numbers.

Hey it sounds interesting, and we have no representation in the Mathematical Project section over at DC Vault, so I figured this would be a way to help us climb the ranks a bit more. I'm the only team member right now, but any who wish to join are welcome!

Feel free to ask me or post on the PSP at mersenneforum.org if you have any questions.

By the way, the PRP client runs at the lowest priority, so if you want another project to have higher priority, just bump its priority up a notch. Unfortunately, there's no way to explicitly set a max CPU percentage. But with UD set one notch higher, it generally splits it about 80%UD/20%PRP, with other processes taking their pieces now and then, of course.

If I've left out anything important, let me know! 8)

It's part of the same group, but a more focused goal. Besides, there aren't that many teams participating in it, so it'll help us at DC Vault!

I'm just giving @20% of one PC to it; maybe 2 PCs ultimately, but that's it.

Edit: It stresses things pretty well, as you might expect. I had to back the PC(which has been dedicated to running UD for about 2 years now)off 1 MHz FSB after it locked up twice in about 10 hrs.

Wound up punching it up to 4 PCs for a temporary "turbo" period, until we pass up Team Ninja 8) , then I'll back it down to the original machine again. After Team Ninja, there's a sizable gap to the next team to be overtaken, so it'll be a few weeks.

So how's this DC team going? Are you still running the client j3P?

Yo, Joined the team. Sounds cool, I also have access to a lot of idle computers at my college campus, I'll see what I can do about running it full bore on them for a while, maybe give us a jump in rank. Email me at JosephToral4079@hotmail.com if you have any questions.

Actually I quit running it once I got the team a ways up in the ranks. The gap to overtake the next team is pretty big. But have at it, guys! 8)

Welcome, Fenris, you may be able to quickly double what I was able to do; I only ran it on 2 or 3 PCs for a few months. :)

Fenris,
There was a delay in them getting you entered onto the team, but I got through to them, and you are now appearing as a member! :)
