Those with IDE problems please post full details!

Postby nForcer » Wed Jun 04, 2003 10:39 am

If you're experiencing IDE problems, it'll be easier to track down your issue and have it resolved if you can provide the following info:

    1 Full product name

    2 Product manufacturer

3 Firmware version (found in the BIOS IDE drive detection page)

4 Drivers in use (MS in-box, 2.03 Miniport [SCSI], 2.41 Bus)

5 Operating system (Win2K or WinXP) with any service packs

6 Description of the bug and steps to reproduce it (if possible)

Thanks :D

Exact Audio Copy have troubles with 2.41 SW-IDE

Postby olmari » Wed Jun 04, 2003 1:47 pm

1. Product name having troubles: Exact Audio Copy, I have Plextor PX-W4824TA burner (primary master), Hitachi GD-8000 DVD-ROM (secondary master) and 2x 120g Seagate Barracudas SATA RAID 0.

2. EAC: Andre Wiethoff http://www.exactaudiocopy.de

3. Firmware? (anyway N/A because SW-IDE's causing this trouble)

4. 2.41 SW-IDE drivers

5. Windows XP SP1 finnish with about every update available

6. When Using 2.41 SW-IDE drivers Exact Audio Copy stops seeing any of my CD-ROMs. To be more specific: When I tell EAC to use ASPI it doesn't see any drive. When I tell EAC to use native 2000/XP "drivers" EAC sees both of my CD-ROMs but never sees any disc what I put in. Drives all allways empty to EAC. Well, then ASAPI thingie does work but it is somewhat slow when compared to those two earlier ones.

With MS-IDE every three options works perfecly exept that ASAPI is still slow.

EDIT: You can reproduce problem by simply installing 2.41 SW-IDE's and running EAC with ASPI or NATIVE setting. I have A7N8X Deluxe 1.04 and BIOS is 1004 über SATA Enhanced

I've tried every ASPI from 4-60 -> Allways same result.

6. After fresh installation of WinXP+SP2:

- Hard Disks shut down when rebooting (but power up again)
- actual: PC doesn't power down when shutting down windows ->
freezes
- Hard Disk(s) randomly shutting down while running windows ->
mostly while running several applications at the same time,
but couldn't figure out exactly how to reproduce it

Speed is good, windows is booting in almost no time at all...

This is post is being updated at the end to reflect testing, still no solution found. :(

1/2 Full product name : Abit NF7-S 2.0, 2x TwinMOS 256 DDR400, AXP2400, ActionTec/I-tec ISDN PCI card, Leadtek GF3Ti200 TDH/64, HDDS: WD800JB (Prim/Ma), TEAC CD540 CDRW (Sec/Ma), Barracuda4/40GB (Sec/Sl), Seagate U6/60 (SiL SATA). PS/2 Mouse and KB. No USB devices.
BIOS 1.1, then 1.4) CPU/MB o/c to 190/280, 166/333 - tested.

3 WD800JB (as it was causing trouble) - 17.07.W17

4 2.03, Microsoft ones, graphics - 43.51

5 WinXP Pro SP1

6 Bug: STOP errors, with WD800JB spin off. most of times it was BAD_POOL_CALLER but not always. It developed after replacing Maxtor drive with WD one and clean reinstall of system. It was happening thru some weeks, typically once a day. It happened very randomly. Sometimes when computer was working heavy and sometime when just browsing inet, left for a few moments, coming back - bsod. The only common thing I can mention was Netscape Navigator and Winamp, during browsing the net.
I had switched on "CPU Interface" in BIOS, now works ok, but I am using other combination of software. Maybe it's just sleeping :-\. Now system is oced to 183/386. RAM = turbo 2-2-2-6. voltages - default.

PS. Before reinstall I had a bit atrange trouble with The All Seeing Eye, game server seeking software. I was getting STOP errors when updating data from net, but that time WinXP config was messed. It went thru some very different hardware configs without clean install, so I've blamed that thing that time. However no drive spinned off.

Edit: No change this bug is still active :(, Switching off all o/cing

Edit2: Not helped, still the same, now trying 2942 audio drivers.
Observation: To me it looks like kind of stall of internal bus, it happens in moment of high disk activity (uncompresing, copying). It is precisely this way: Computer freezes for a second, then screen gooes black for another second, then disk shuts down and WinXp displays STOP error screen. Very often "system is unable to identify driver causing trouble". I have second config of win98 for developing some older software and gaming - error doesn't happens there (no single time), I can work and game all day without problems.

Edit3: 2942 - no help, trying 2.42 (w/o their audio). Not helped. Trying some different BIOS settings.
Observation: It looks like HDD cache is flushed before generationg STOP error, even if it hapens while copying I have seen any lost clusters and file sizes seems proper (when copying was stopped in mid, I have half of file) and delay between freeze is longer when there is lot of data to flush. I don't get it, if Windows is capable to flush disk cache from RAM, why it is generating these damn STOPs?

Edit4: I have checked all BIOS options could have impact on this issue. None helped. :(:(:(. I think now it's WinXP/XPdrivers problem, cause on second partition Win98 works without any problems.

Edit5: As I don't use onboard LAN, FireWire and USB I've disabled them in BIOS. I thought that problems are generated by some resource conflict. To my suprise it got much worse, after connecting to inet I could browse for a few minutes max . to get this annoying error :( (prev. it was after few hours always).

Edit6: Ok now after setting 'IDE Prefetch' option in BIOS to Disabled problems seems gone, altought I will do further testing.

IDE Probs:

Product: Asus A7n8x DLX 2.0 (BIOS 1004), WD 80GB SE, TDK 40x12x48x (both cable select).

Drivers: 2.41 Bus, and 2.03 SW

OS: WinXP sp1

ASPI: Adaptec 4.71.1

Bug 2.03: Will not recognize CD-r Drive as DMA, uses PIO (fixed in 2.41).
Bug 2.41: reboot immediately after install no problems. After another reboot or shutdown, USB stops working, NICs stop working, System becomes extremely slow during disk access, and will not boot a third time. HD benchmarks showed good numbers, but actual use was extremely slow. effect remained even after reinstalling 2.03s, and second try at 2.41, and then 2.41 w/o IDE drivers. Sometime later the computer fail to boot, upon restart the effect was gone.

No luck here, again HD shuts down and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, this time not NV4_MINI.SYS, ALWAYS when web surfing. Last night i made burn in test with SiSoft Sandra, all perfect.. this situation is incredible, ridiculous, i'm seriously thinking about moving to VIA chipset or something else, i cannot continue in this way, my system's behaviour is totally unpredictable.

1. Product name - MDT MD40 0BB-00BSA0, CRW8824E

2. Manufacturer - Western Digital (actually, it's under a generic OEM name as you can see but it's identical to the WD400BB), Yamaha

3. Firmware version - don't know.

4. Driver version - 2.03 Miniport [SCSI], 2.41 [ASPI]

5. OS - WindowsXP Professional w/SP1 and all current updates

6. Bugs: 2.03 - Random lockups and power-downs, makes odd loud seeking noises, after a while it locks up permanently and I'm forced to reboot. This doesn't happen a few times a week; it does this constantly with only 30-60 seconds of time between each occurence. Strangely enough, though, this only began happening after I switched back from the 2.41 drivers.

2.41 - Hard drive powers down on reboot. CD-ROM suffers from random lockups and most of the time can't be detected by the OS.

Before using both drivers, I had performed a clean install and installed the motherboard drivers before Windows Update (I can't use my Ethernet controller until I have its drivers installed, so I have no Internet access).

You can see the rest of my system parts below.
