I have an odd problem with sub par performance on my 43 SN41G2 systems. I use them in my gaming center. They are all version 1. They are all configured identically with the following components.
AthlonXP 2100 clocked at 2015 MHz (FSB is 155X2)
Two 512 MB PC3200 DDR synced with FSB (Shows up as Dual Channel)
80 GB Maxtor Drive (7200RPM, 2MB Cache)
Samsung CDRW
Radeon 9700 Pro
Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all the latest updates.
Latest BIOS.
I am using the latest ATI video Drivers and NForce chipset drivers. I use the Realtek audio driver (3.89) in lieu of the NForce audio driver. I do not use the NForce SW IDE driver.
I have run numerous benchmarks and the systems. I checked the following with SANDRA: Memory bandwidth is great, so it is not a factor. Hard Drive Performance is fine. CPU performance is about the same as a 2600 almost 2700.
The problem is in 3D benchmarks. The system only scores 13,200 in 3DMark 2001. I have tried different video drivers, negligible difference. I have tried different BIOS, no difference. I have tried different BIOS settings, no difference. I have tried a new big 500 Watt power supply (obviously sitting outside the case), no difference. I get these scores with a fresh install of XP and nothing else. I even integrated all the drivers on the CD to make sure there were no old drivers causing the problem. I even tried SP1 but no luck. When I clock the system back to standard 2100+ speed it only drops by about 500 points. Even then it is slower than it should be.
When I compare these results with other NForce2 systems with the same hardware they usually score around 15,000. I do not understand what is causing the slow down.
Is the SN41G2 just slower than other NForce2 systems or am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jeff |

check the video card clocks on those other reports. how many of them overclocked the video card too?
that was what i noticed a lot when comparing my stock system to other systems. |

I was comparing it to a chart from Tom's Hardware. They were using a 9700 Pro and comparing different processors to see how the processor scaled. No overclocking. I am going to try using an older video driver, 5.11 to see if that helps.
I seem to get subpar performance regardless of the video card used. I tried using a new Geforce 6600 and it was slower than it should have been too.
Maybe there is a problem with the Nforce2 drivers, any suggestions would be appreciated. |

HDD with a bigger cache during the tests?
Was there a seperate HDD for the benchmark and the OS? That increases the "points" as well.
Of course, I could give a damn about 3DMark or any other gaming benchmark, if what I'm running plays my games acceptably. Just my opinion though. |

you're missing nothing. The SN41G2 v1.4 is slower than the SN41G2 v3 with the same CPU/RAM/Gfx. Mine are, and unfortunately this is by design, not by accident.
The original nForce2 reference designs were released before AMD announced the 200 MHz FSB Athlons, so we at NVIDIA could not advertise the IGP for that speed. The first round of nForce2 consumer boards were designed for 166/333 MHz FSB, so most OEM board manufacturers never spec'd components for a 200/400 MHz use (including Shuttle). You'd think they saw the same AMD NDA that we did at NVIDIA, but whatever...)
Later on after AMD release 200/400 MHz Athlons, the nForce2 SPP was advertized for 200/400 MHz FSB. However, most IGPs continued to be rated for only 166/333 even with a graphics card in the AGP slot.
YMMV.
