I have read through tons of material here but have not found a clear answer to my question so here goes.
I was wondering if
#1 - is it possible to run Vista on a hard drive (call it SATA A) and install 2 identical hard drives (call them SATA B and C) and RAID 1 (mirror) ONLY hard drives B and C ?
#2 - if possible normally, can it be done under nForce4 or will I need a controller card?
I don't need or want the OS mirrored, but I do have data that I would like backed up. So I am thinking of buying two 500GB SATAII drives and mirroring them. High performance is not necessary. Typical performance would be just fine.

Yes.

It can be done under nForce4, but a RAID Controller card is better/safer. |

I suppose I could ask my question here... So, I have 2-disk raid1. When I eventually upgrade my computer and buy a new motherboard, how do these disks react to it? Can I:
a) Just move the raid to the new motherboard, without needing to format the drives? And it works all nice and dandy?
Or:
b) Do I need to copy all the data to a 3rd disk, format the raid disks, create new raid with the new mobo, and copy data back from 3rd disk?
Also: Why would buying a separate raid controller be a better idea than using the one integrated with the motherboard?
Thanks in advance. |
