NVidia RAID Controller on 650 SLI.

Postby flexnix » Fri Feb 19, 2010 3:28 pm

I have a ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard with RAID 1. The main hard drive failed on the array failed. If I disable the RAID config in the BIOS and swap the good drive from SATA2 port to SATA1 will it boot up just fine?

No no, I set it up as RAID 1...but when you boot the system it says the RAID is degraded. So does that means I can't rebuild the Raid array if I put in a new drive? So if not then I was thinking of disabling NVRAID in the bios, taking out the bad drive on SATA1 and getting the 2nd good connected to SATA1.

If it was RAID 1, you should just be able to boot as normal with the remaining healthy drive, have you tried that yet...?

Then when you get your replacement drive, you just add it as a mirror to the already existing 'RAID 1' array, it should be fine.

Thanks. Its working like a charm, but another question. I swapped the bad drive with an identical new one that I got locally. Booted into the NVIDIA RAID BIOS (F10). Set for it to rebuild and now its in "Rebuild" and not Healthy yet. How long does it take to Rebuild? When will the status change? Do I need to do anything in Windows 2003 server? I looked at the drive in device manager and it comes up as NVIDIA MIRRIOR 149.09GB under "Drives".

I was wondering if I should update the RAID drivers since I don't have the NVIDIA Mediashield installed which lets me view the RAID and do a SMART scan to make sure they are both ok.

The reason I could do a SMART scan before and figured out which drive was bad was when the drives degraded themselves and separated thus giving me multi drive letters in Windows. I installed the new drivers on the bad drive since it was the master at the time.

So far thanks for the help guys. =D>
