I don't believe that
I have to deal with lots of old PCs yearly, just these lasts months I've seen Geforce 2,3,4,Quadro4,the crappy FX series,6200,6600,6800GT,7300GT,7600GT,8800GT and GTX running strong.
Only one that has failed was the 8600GT,overclocked(and possibly related to the G84 problems and heat).Like it has been said the failure rate is pretty equal on both sides.
I think nVidia has great PR and pays to get some great press, but the fact is if you want your money to last you buy ATI/AMD
nVidia is like that Honda Civic with the engine swap you see on Craigslist. yeah it runs great for a while, and has tons of horsepower, but then a couple months later you're thrown a rod and you're putting a new engine in.
That's all about luck, and I guess it's just the same with vidcards
