Hi,

I just got my beta testing account for the einstein@home project and have created a team (of which I am the only member) over here. As I stated before, I have migrated all my computers from folding@home to this new project. I'll probably switch back when Vijay releases the beta GPU folding core in the coming months, but for now this project interests me the most.

I'll probably write a FAQ and some other general information when the project is released to the public, though for now a small summary should suffice:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Information: (written by me, with citation provided were needed)

The project runs through the BOINC software. BOINC is an open infastructure client developed by Berkely University; its purpose is to allow the end user to easily select, manage, and run a multitude of DC apps with a dynamic affinity. For more information, visit the BOINC homepage

Here is a screenshot of the client crunching a WU from e@h:

Einstein@home is a program that uses your computer's idle time to search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors. We plan to deploy a production version of Einstein@home as part of the American Physical Society's World Year of Physics 2005 activities.

WU System/Results:

The credit system of einstein@home works unlike any other I've seen. Here is a small excerpt from their site, located in the getting started section:

The project's server keeps track of how much work each participant has contributed; this is called credit. The following system is used to ensure that credit is granted fairly:
  • Each work unit is sent to at least two computers.
  • When a computer reports a result, it claims a certain amount of credit, based on how much CPU time was used.
  • When at least two results have been returned, the server compares them. If the results agree, then users are granted the smaller of the claimed credits.

Each work unit takes (on my AXP-M 2.65GHz) ~5 hours, and on the Celeron-T 1500MHz, ~ 10 hours. The client itself also uses very litte RAM, varying from 6-10MB. Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this project is that once results are uploaded, they are instantly visible on the stats page of your account. There is no preset stats-update interval that exists with other projects such as folding@home.

Interesting Fact: A piece of a neutron star the size of a sugar cube weighs more than all the humans on earth combined.

Please add any other pertinent information and links to your first post for members unfamiliar with BOINC or DC Projects in general, to help make the process of joining and installing the necessary software as easy as possible for them. Thank you, and I will make this my secondary project for when BOINC SETI isn't sending me work Smile

Damn, I signed up to be a beta tester months ago, and yet almost every other applicant got a key.

They have enabled account creation, albeit temporarily, in anticipation of going public in the coming weeks.

For testing purposes, in anticipation of our public launch, we will be enabling account creation for some unannounced periods this week. If you are interested in joining Einstein@Home, please try the Create Account link.

Crunching my 1st WU Cool SETI has been having a lot of issues lately so this will keep 1 of my Opterons busy while it is idle. I assigned it 50% of the resources so will they both get a CPU or will it load balance? Confused

I think it'll load balance. SETI had issues lately after switching to a new server, a different server began giving trouble.

SETI still won't upload all the units I have waiting but it finally just gave me another 1 to crunch. Now there is 1 instance of each running and I have 100% on both CPUs so load balance or not it is what I was hoping for Smile
