We'll see. The standard will be basically useless for the first six months anyway. It may be they're not actually going to be putting it in chipsets until that's done anyway, for all we know.

Exactly, after all PCIe has been a huge flop for anything other then graphics and its been around for four years. So USB2.0 will be a hold over for some time till 3.0 goods arrive.

The annoying thing will be that they will state a wonderful theoretical bandwidth of xGbps but it will only deliver 120mbps at best in the real world.

Theoretical speeds should be banned really. If a product cannot actually reach that in real world usage it doesnt apply.

I wouldn't say PCIe has been a huge flop for anything. We've had network cards and RAID cards and such on PCIe but the notable exception has been soundcards, which have steadfastly refused to change until recently. Also, some onboard devices undoubtedly use the PCI-e bus instead of the PCI bus they used to use.

I expect the only reason we're seeing cards now where we weren't before is PCIe 2.0. It probably improves on PCIes latency problems. And the chipsets themselves are undoubtedly much better as well.

Nvidia, AMD vie with Intel over USB 3.0

AMD and Nvidia aim to wrest control of a crucial PC specification from Intel, arguing that the chip giant is trying to box them out as they move to a new era of faster peripherals.

Greetings!

Intel unforks USB 3.0, world rejoices

Apparently backing down from its prior stance, Intel has released its USB 3.0 xHCI specification. If you'll recall, Intel was originally criticized for keeping its USB 3.0 spec away from competitors, resulting in a possible forking of the spec and an "Intel vs. world" scenario where AMD, Via and others threatened to co-develop a more open USB 3.0. Intel has now more or less agreed that idea was sillypants, and has unveiled a royalty-free draft specification.
