Have to say I'm not impressed with 8's update system.
5/6/7 had a very simple set and forget and load update at startup.
8 now has to be coaxed into updates and now has updates that require a restart.
Updates that require restart? What is this 1999?
Big step backwards. |

I agree, in fact I'm really beginning to dislike AVG 8, everything that worked so smooth and efficient in AVG 7 is now a bloated clunky mess.
I've now switched most of my other Windoze rigs over to ClamWin, hugely lighter (albeit less functional), super fast upates, and incredibly basic, just the way I like it... |

Can't argue with 8 myself. It's much better than 7 was, especially when scanning, and catches a lot more (what with the antispyware and antirootkit stuff.)
I don't know how the free one is, but my ver automagically checks for updates.
The Linkscanner/Safesearch stuff I could do without, but it doesn't support Opera so I haven't had any complaints.
Still, I don't know why the hell I paid for AVG when I never get a virus anyway. I might just let my subscription lapse at the end of it, but that's next year.

Yep enabled that and its bad that that is not the default option. However, it does update when I start it up in the morning for the next update but then it needs to restart to get the update to work.
That is supremely retarded. AVG7 never needed a restart in all the years I used it.
AVG7 used to just fire up forst thing and notify you it was updating then would pop up a window to say it was done.
Irritating but reassuring none the less.
I guess they are just making the free version more of a pain to use so we switch to the paid version. Maybe 7 was just too good as a free product, in that it just did the job with very little hassle. |

That is kinda wierd.
I admit I have had more trouble than I should've with some of the updates...especially 8s firewall. But thats been MOSTLY cleared up.
I don't know why they had such a godawful launch though. The launch had too many glaring issues...should've been another beta.
Probably x64 users had it worse off.

Yeah it is kind of wierd but as you say, maybe its a 64bit thing.
Might settle down over a few more client updates. |

| Security company AVG is upgrading a component of its antivirus software so as not to place an undue traffic load on the Web sites it scans. The company has already released a patch for LinkScanner, part of its Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0, and will release a patch for the paid versions of the software on Tuesday, said Lloyd Borrett, marketing manager for AVG in Australia and New Zealand. |

I don't know when this launched, but AVG Free got SP1 also

Program update AVG 8.0.135 - SP1
Improvements & fixes
* Remake of internal communication to eliminate undesired program status appearance (hibernation, sleep mode, cold restart, ...).
* Display of the system tray icon representing running scan (that can be paused or stopped from the context menu).
* Added option to ignore the status of a component via context menu in the AVG main interface: the system tray icon then reports OK status even if a component is in error status.
* System restore point is created before launching a program update.
* Improved EML file processing including scanning of user mailboxes.
* RAM requirements optimization.
* New design of the system tray pop-up window, and more information provided.
* Improved statistics of detected objects in Email Scanner and resident Shield.
* To eliminate AVG collisions with OS, only minimum drivers are installed in safe mode; then it is possible to launch on-demand scanning from the command line only, and a new GUI dialog has been added to ease the scan configuration.
* Added option of restoring a file from the Virus Vault to the original folder even if the folder has been removed.
* Added option of deleting the Resident Shield and Email Scanner history.
* Improved stability and design of GUI.
* Improved detection of former Lotus Notes/MS Exchange plugins installations during AVG setup.
* Fixed crash during the update process.
* Fixed problems with detection of some external USB DVD/CD drives.
* Fixed problem with inactive components after update.
* Fixed possible corruption of transferred data when the Web Shield is enabled.
* Fixed a possible crash caused by the Web Shield.
* Fixed problem with switching to small font size in Microsoft Internet Explorer after closing AVG User Interface.
* Fixed repetitive backup of scanned files by Vista incremental backup service.
* Improved parsing of Google advertising URLs. |
