I have a strange problem with my system. Twice (in the last two months) it has started up and not recognised the HDD to boot from. I have had to shut down the system and wait a few minutes before turning it on for it to boot normally (if I just reboot, it still doesn't detect the HDD).
Also, it sometimes (maybe once every week/two weeks) it will turn on and turn off straight away. After switching it on again, it is almost as if the CMOS has been reset and the bus speed will need resetting to 166 (for my XP2500).
Any ideas what these problems could be? I suspect that the system is dying, but I would really prefer it if the system didn't die right away (I can't afford to replace it!)
For the first problem, could it be the HDD that is at fault or the IDE controller?
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Thanks for all the replies folks. So far (touch wood) it has remained stable for the past few months. I have another question about hard drives, but this isn't the topic to put it under.
Thanks again.
