List of games that have issues with SoundStorm's EAX! Post!

Postby Monarch » Sat Jun 14, 2003 6:55 pm

I just thought it might be easier for nVidia (if they visit this forum) to know which games have this REVERB issue with SoundStorm drivers when EAX is enabled. Crackling problem doesn't count (its going to be fixed for sure in the next set of drivers).

From the ones I have:

Half-Life and all mods!
GTA 3
GTA Vice City
Dungeon Siege
Blade of Darkness
Enter the Matrix
Diablo 2
NeverWinter Nights - some terrible HISSING happens when EAX is enabled...
Gothic 2 - you can't hear many sounds, even with revern OFF. It sounds really wierd!

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2

When driving under bridges and tunnels sometimes the sound crackles with EAX/DSound3D enabled.

Eve online while still in its infancy has problems with SoundStorm. They are fixable but then again this game has a great many issues.

Think you are going about this the wrong way, you should try to create a list that doesn't have problems with eax (ones that support eax obviously). :)

Actually it is easier to list the problems with the games, that way people/devs can see if the problems/symptoms are related.

I have no problems with planetside EAX. Im running it under EAX 3 in emulation mode (using openAL).

My master volume settings are tuned down to around 55% before they are mixed. I found that lowering the master output volume (under the environment ---> source levels) has stopped 100% of the sound problems I had before. I was getting bad crackling/distortion after about 30-50mins of play. After reading a post here to turn down the pre-mix volumes, it went away. I believe the distortion problem is related to the southbridge getting too hot.

Here's another game with sound problems:
Battlefield 1942

It's not an EAX problem but a 3D positioning problem.
Footsteps are muffled unless you look at your feet while running. It's the same with the health boxes. The bandage "ripping" sound is too low unless you look down.

Operation Flashpoint [Resistance]

EAX seems to set reverb not only too high, but to maximum volume, even louder than original sound, and distance has no effect on the volume of the reverb/effect
meaning : you shoot a bullet on a hill 50meters from you , you hear the reverb noise louder than the impact...
now you shoot the bullet on a hill like more than 500meters away, wait a little, you dont hear the impact, still you hear the reverb of the impact sound as loud as when you shot 50meters away...

jDoom

Turning on EAX gets rid of all 3D-positioned sounds... when EAX is off, the 3D positioning works fine. Yes, I know it's a free, user-made port, but it still happens to have the best sounding EAX 3 support I've ever heard (back when I had an Audigy, that is).
