Current reports are that just over 9 million BD disks have now been sold.

Thats a bit embarrasing really.

Heh. If I recall, that works out to less than one disk per player (if you count the PS3). Laughing

Greetings!

Blu-ray hits bumps in the road to HD market dominance

Mid-February was a good time to be a Blu-ray backer. Media moguls who had championed the technology were busy floating on yachts in the Pacific, chomping cigars, and stroking white longhaired cats; the billion-dollar payday was at hand. But numbers out last week indicate that standalone Blu-ray player sales plummeted in the early part of this year, and enthusiasm for the hi-def format appears as lukewarm as the applause at an REO Speedwagon concert. Where did all the buyers go?

No format war= no news = no publicity.

Wawawawawaaaaaaaa

I think a lot of folks are thinking that they better things to spend their money on right now. I know I do.

Either that or they thought "oooo we'll buy one now!" then saw the cost of the disks and said sod that!

Greetings!

AMIMON, Motorola, Sony, et al. join hands on wireless HD standard
...
After watching the wireless HD / HDMI sector fumble along for years on end, a team of mega-corps have finally agreed to push their self-interests aside and collaborate on a standard. WHDI creator AMIMON has joined forces with Motorola, Samsung, Sony and Sharp in order to form "a special interest group to develop a comprehensive new industry standard for multi-room audio, video and control connectivity" utilizing the aforementioned Wireless Home Digital Interface technology.

Pioneer's new 16-Layer 400GB Blu-ray disk, (and its backwards compatable) :-

Quote:
Pioneer is developing a 16-layer Blu-ray disc that has a capacity of 400GB, claiming to be the first of its kind.

The discs feature 25GB per layer, which is the same as a Blu-ray disc. This multilayer technology will also be applicable to multilayer recordable discs.

The lens specifications are the same as existing BD discs, making it possible to be compatible with existing Blu-ray players.

Pioneer uses a technique that reduces crosstalk from adjacent layers. The result is a 16-layer optical disc that plays high-quality signals from every layer.

Pioneer will release more details on July 13 in Hawaii at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage.

Probably the coating on the disc, it's supposedly scratch resistant (or rather better coping with scratches than CD/DVD/HD-DVD's are).

Hehe, I remember that also... Laughing

Blu-ray's do seem better though, the data side is almost teflon like and you can't scratch it by wiping it with a rough cloth like CD/DVD's do. So for general wear and tear they are more reliable, a chap I speak to in the local console shop says he's never had a PS3 2nd hand trade in game that refused to play.

But yeah, I very much doubt even a Blu-ray would hold up to sandpaper treatment... Smile

blu-ray discs have to be made from harder materials because a scratch would be catastrophic. I'm thinking about using those d-skin things on my DVDs from now on but I haven't bought any yet, a few too many inoperable games on my shelf :/
