Greetings!

Analog Devices bails on SoundMAX, PC audio

Analog Devices' SoundMAX line of audio codecs has been one of the more notable integrated audio options in PC motherboards for some time now. SoundMAX solutions have found their way into motherboards from Intel and Asus, among others, and have fared reasonably well in our testing. However, ADI hasn't quite managed to steal enough market share away from suppliers like Realtek to make a go of it, and now, the firm has decided to cease development of new PC audio codecs in order to focus on other markets.

That's a shame, AD codecs were generally the best up until very recently.

Well C-Media still make some fine audio codecs.

C-Media is getting the third party soundcard contracts, Sigmatel is getting the OEM system contracts, Realtek is getting the DIY motherboard contracts...I must admit I've seen few systems using Analog Devices stuff.

Greetings!

High-end motherboards from Asus usually had AD.

Some of the more recent Realtek codecs are actually half decent (the ALC889A for example), but I'd like to see more C-Media codecs back on more motherboards though, the last one I had onboard was on an Iwill KK266+ back in the day.

Yeah, some Realtek chips are half decent, but they're still pretty much bottom of the barrel.
