Greetings!

DirectX 11 to get announced this month
..
The big feature of DirectX 11 is Tessellation/Displacement while we also heard that Multithreaded Rendering and Compute Shaders are part of it. DirectX 11 also brings Shader model 5.0 but we don’t know many details about it.

And:
Nvidia won’t ever do DirectX 10.1
They will go for DirectX 11

The eternal question whether Nvidia will go for DirectX 10.1 with its next generation of chips is answered. It won’t and it never will. Nvidia will skip ATI’s DirectX 10.1 and plans to move to DirectX 11.

It's bizarre how NV does that. They get the immediate advantage then slowly lose it as apps start coming out using what they don't support.

IMO it's a pretty unbalanced way to look at things.

It's no different to when ATi sat on the fence with SM3.0, eventually they have to support the new features.

That is true. Only time I recall that ATI's been on the technologically unbalanced side of things.

Of course I was ignoring ATI at that point, so I forget about it Laughing

hasn't nvidia done this once before already? and didn't it cost them a fair few sales in favour of the ATI cards who could support the latest versions?

i can't remember the details because i seem to have forgotten about them.. but i'm sure i remember hearing/reading about nvidia not turning up to a direct-x conference because they wanted intel to use their own version of DX and intel basically told them to [burger] awf, and ATI ended up with the latest version support.

was it DX 9.0b? can't remember now.

The last time IIRC that Nvidia was behind before in DX tech was in the GF4 vs 8500 era (DX8.0 vs DX8.1). For DX9 ATI was first to market with the 9700 Pro (DX9.0) but Nvidia followed with the FX 5800U (9.0a, yep the card was slower but it technically had more features) and then the 6800U (DX9.0c) while ATI was on X800 Pro (9.0b).

DirectX 11 Details Emerge, Adds New Features to DX10 Hardware
...
A launch date for the new software was not provided, though Microsoft is expected to release more information in the near future. The bullet points, as provided by Microsoft, are listed below.

* Full support (including all DX11 hardware features) on Windows Vista as well as future versions of Windows
* Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
* New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor
* Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
* Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close

Greetings!

DirectX 11 promises to unlock the horsepower in multi-core CPUs and enable GP GPUs

Last week, Microsoft held its annual XNA Gamefest developers conference. During the conference, Microsoft announced major changes for its Games for Windows Live service. Also, the company announced DirectX 11, which is considered to be key API for next generation of PC and console games. We got the opportunity to chat with Microsoft’s Windows gaming guy about these changes and how they will affect the platform and gamers. And we learned that DX11 is perhaps the DX that should have been released with Windows Vista.

I think it's not until 2009 so I'm sure I can wait for it too.
