Greetings!

First look: Songbird 0.6 open source media player

The open source Songbird music player took a big step forward on Friday with the official release of version 0.6, which significantly improves performance, augments support for media player devices, and reduces the program's memory footprint. Another noteworthy new feature is support for editing music metadata.

We tested Songbird 0.6 on Ubuntu 8.04 to see how it compares to other open source media players. Although we encountered some bugs during our testing, the overall Songbird experience proved compelling. It has some unique features and offers a very high level of extensibility.

Hands on: Songbird 1.0 music app soars

In a desktop media realm dominated by iTunes and Windows Media Player, Songbird is an open source player that dances to its own beat. Built on Mozilla technology, Songbird offers a very customizable interface and integrates a pleasant variety of web services that offer everything from artist bios, lyrics, music store integration, and much more. Since Songbird is now available as an official 1.0 release candidate after a two-year development journey, we felt it was time to plug in some headphones and check it out.
