PostPosted: Thu Jun 12, 2008 2:54 pm    Post subject: enable AHCI on nForce4 (A8N32-SLI Deluxe) with Vista x64

I have an Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe (nForce4 chipset) and Windows Vista x64. I've been trying to enable AHCI so that I can use the SATA hot swapping feature. I can't seem to get that to work on this computer. I have another motherboard withe an nForce4 chipset (A8N-VM CSM) and I am able to get the SATA hot swapping feature to work on that computer (there's a 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon for the hard drive I want to disconnect). I've tried the drivers from this post: http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/1-vt70915.html?postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=0... but no joy. Do I have to do a fresh install and then install those drivers first?

In the BIOS, I only have these options:
enable/disable SATA1/2
enable/disable SATA3/4
enable/disable RAID

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.[/url]

NForce4 chipset mainboards do not have any BIOS option to enable the AHCI mode of the nForce S-ATA ports.
Nevertheless you will be able to get the "hot swapping feature", if you install the suitable nForce IDE drivers (v9.99.09 or v10.3.0.21) the correct way.

and by "the correct way" - would that mean re-installing Vista and specifying the drivers before starting the installation?

This would be the safest way for a proper installation of the nForce IDE drivers, if the driver update from within a running Vista x64 should fail.

Actually, in this matter I do know few bytes..

You actually cannot enable AHCI or well it's features with any other way than using Standard Microsoft driver or v6.xx from XP and only way to go with any decency would be to use v10.1.0.26 of Nvidia driver which would enable you to NcQ the drives, but would not give you S.M.A.R.T. anyhow if you do experiment look at stickies on this forum section there's benchmarks and also experimental XP driver usage style. Should give at least some advice.

You mentioned Windows XP in your comment. I will be using Windows Vista x64. Does your comment still apply?

Yes I used Windows XP on my comment for reason. Read what I wrote through. The v6.xx === Windows XP drivers not Vista's and as said also those are pure experimental for idea of enabling what you ask. Also might wanna take a really deep look what I wrote about this subject at topic I mentioned here to understand why even I wouldn't recommend to take this path.

You are right regarding NCQ support, but the feature slow4runner wants is just the "HotSwap" and this should work with the mentioned Vista nForce IDE drivers (according to your Vista IDE driver review within your sticky topic).

yeah, software called 'HotSwap!' and the package you mentioned with v10.3.0.21 works decently on there. (word AHCI means a bit more than no single Nvidia driver can comprehend anyway, haha..)
