Epox EP9-NPA + Ultra, nForce4 w int.NIC, AMD X2 4200+, Geforce 8600GTS, Realtek PCI NIC.

When starting a multiplayer session both can usually choose a car, but latest when the run is started the slave machine gives "Connection to host lost" if "Epox" is hosting. If "Epox" is slave, the game will jam. In both cases the host can carry on as normally.

We proved this to be somehow HW /driver related: two separate XP installations both w latest nVidia drivers (6.86 and 169.21). Firewall and antivirus down. An extra Realtek NIC installed to PCI slot. Tried a straight crossconnected cable between the machines. Networking is otherwise ok, we can move files from one machine to another. Put any other machine (we have several but not any other w nForce4) instead "Epox", games work normally.

So far we have tried Flatout 1 & 2, fixed ip:s, DHCP, uninstalling nVidia drivers, and reinstalling them w/o IDEdrivers and NAM and so on...

Any ideas?

Slow down the LANs... The 1000Mbit or 100Mbit is sometimes way too stressful. So go to your 'ethernet'-card settings and set it auto 10Mbit Full Duplex on epox. Also to lose some stress use newest network controller driver on XP it's atm v67.76.1 and on Vista it's v67.76.0 (check on nforce drivers thread here on forums buy fellow called 'fernando 1'.)

Of course this is so so so hard to solve as unless those helps as it could very very well be on game scripting to work with the Epox machine differently than other box unless of course both uses same chipsets/LANs.

-edit-

Also check if the network controller has priority enabled on VLAN and test disabling it (It is enabled to priority usually only). This will stress CPU less and stop some cuts on game, but you could as well test then to enable it to VLAN and Priority.

Also same location is option called 'Low Power State Link Speed' this is option which allows windows to lower/shutoff even network controller. So turn it to disable.

Cheers, mate. Nice to get some proper advice, especially as it has so far been the only one I've had! Ok, slowing down the net we haven't tried, though I did try to lock the speeds to 100Mbit full duplex, both w Realtek. BTW, as chipsets we've had older and newer VIAs and at the moment all the other machines are using nForce 1 to 3. Epox is the only one w nF4.

Will take a couple of weeks to test, the gaming house is a bit far away...

Well, the game doesn't need anything near 100Mbit nor doubt anything else (of course people do have high speed internets, but ignoring that for now). The machines has to keep the 100/1000Mbit link speed up when connected all the time and that in all the suddently dumped fullstream could easily be reason why it does what it does.

Also would check the other methods I wrote above and perhaps an additional check the TX/RX Flow control to be on while at it. It's on same properties (This might be bad if the driver isn't after all working properly, but generally it'll be good to be on. Vista systems off since Vista has a bit different network controlling.)

and if anything else from my advices doesn't work you can also go to 3rd party solution and hit 10/100Mbit Full Duplex mode on and google up tool called 'Netlimiter' hit it to box & limit Local area connection speed around 80% of full capacity (10 full = 1280KB/s 'theory' so around 800KB/s or 100Mbit = 12800KB/s so around 8000KB/s) prefer still the 10Mbit should kill the time out.

Finally, I have solved the problem. It was driver related yes, but nForce or NIC driver NO.

I managed to get another nForce4 MB machine, which worked OK w the games. Examining closely only one thing was relevantly different: the Epox machine did NOT have AMD driver installed, the other one did. Copied it, installed and everything started working.

The biggest reason for not finding this earlier, is that Epox has not listed any downloadable drivers for this MB at their site, oddly enough.

The driver I have now used came from Asus´s site and is pretty old, I guess you might find a newer one from here:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html

But thanks anyway, TwL

Well, clad it works. Hmm, wonder why the AMD driver would bother such case.

AMD site has something like v1.32 driver to XP and there's an AMD Dual-Core Optimizer on their site & hotfix from network to correct the trottle looks like this:

Code:
go down to "Session Manager" and right-click. from the menu choose "New"
The Key is to be named "Throttle". Once this is created right click "Throttle" and select New>DWORD Value
In the value name type: PerfEnablePackageIdle
Then click "modify". in the Edit DWORD Value box, type 1 and check the this is Hexidecimal.
4. Check your boot command menu
This should have this feature in it: /usepmtimer
to check this go to Start>Control Panel>System
The go to the "Advanced Tab" and click "Settings" on "Startup and Recovery" and then "EDIT"
If this is not in there add it to the list.
