Apple Shows Strong Growth, Captures Two-thirds of $1k+ PC Market:-
| Quote: |
| This time it wasn't Jobs who was hailing the Mac's market turnaround, but NPD, fresh off their latest number crunching. In Q1 2008, Macs overall took 14 percent of the market for personal computers, and took a whopping 66 percent of the lucrative $1,000+ personal computer market. On the desktop side of things, Apple owned a 14 percent overall retail share, and 70 percent share of the $1,000+ sales. For notebooks, the sales were 14 percent and 64 percent respectively. |

Microsoft...?
I must admit that if I was looking at buying a new laptop right now, I would buy a Macbook Pro easily, simply because of the spec/aesthetics...
...but then I'd butcher it to run Ubuntu & Vista also.
I would 'never' have considered buying a Mac a couple of years ago, but I'm currently on the hunt for an old 2nd hand PPC G5 for a Linux project too.

I think MSes only problem right now is that they're completely ignoring the strong movement Apple is showing in advertising. If MS even HAD a counterpoint it would help immensely.
I see Mac ads bashing MS+Vista every time I turn on the DVR (and naturally I skip them) but I haven't seen one Vista commercial since it came out. Whut. |

Microsoft could always (have always...) use the gaming hammer to bash Mac's with, and it's worked in the past. But Vista/DX10 in general hasn't done them many favours in the publics eyes (not technically, just public perception of Vista/DX10 being bloated/slow).
But as the article alludes a modern Mac/Macbook is a different beast to those older PPC dinosaurs, in the fact that it's a x86 machine which can run Windows also, and is right on the money performance wise. And they look good too, Mac's have always had aesthetic style.
Another main reason = iPod, the iPod basically kick started and transformed the image of Apple from 'Nerdy/Cult' to 'Trendy/Mainstream' in one swift move, they are still riding that wave.
You could also say that Microsoft (as mainly a software company...) doesn't give two hoots about end consumer hardware as long as they are selling copies of Windows, whether they end up to be bought and installed on a PC or a Mac via Bootcamp is almost irrelevant to them (of course most people who buy Mac's just use OS X anyway...). One things for sure is that the 'Windows PC' as a computing platform is being attacked from all sides more vigorously than I can ever remember before.
In any case I'm still not a fan of OS X though, not that it's a bad OS or doesn't do exactly what it says on the box, it's just too Fisher Price for my liking... |

And thats the problem. The perception doesn't match the reality, so the negative advertising is just reinforcing that belief.
Microsoft is making shedloads of cash right now so they might not care much, but it's going to bite them in the ass if you ask me.
It's not that they aren't selling to Mac users so much as that they aren't trying to fight the perception the Mac marketing team is pumping out that Vista is [Eartha Kitt].
*shrug*
It doesn't really affect me what MS does or doesn't do of course, it just surprises me. Microsoft is not traditionally a company that prefers to be silent while other companies walk on them.

| One thing I've heard from one of our network guys here at work and someone else is that supposedly Windows runs better on a MAC through bootcamp than it does natively installed on a Wintel box. Both of them were talking about getting a MAC and using bootcamp to load XP for gaming. |

In theory it should be the same, all bootcamp really does is allow a BIOS booting OS to run on EFI, in fact Vista x64 supports EFI natively also.
EFI > BIOS
But other than that it's the same speed, though Intel Mac's are generally very well built machines hardware wise. |
