I have a Dell Inspiron 531 (Vista) with nForce4 that is completely SATA. I'm trying to install a PATA controller to recover an old Ultra 100 drive but when I install the IDE card MediaShield hangs on "detecting array..." The Inspiron is running one HDD so not RAID. The addon is a Sil680 based RAID Controller but not set to RAID as I only want to add one PATA drive. I'd really appreciate any ideas anyone might have. Thanks.

Is there IDE slots on that board where you can attach the drive? well if there is wouldn't this work just by you attaching the HDD inside & enable IDE in Dell bios?

There's multible options really you could even use it as USB with drive case.. although that costs few euros/dollars. However not too expensive.

-edit-

hmm, just for reminder when you attach the drive and enable the IDE remember to check the boot order to be from the system drive and not beeing all the suddently on IDE (as IDE is always first it changes sometimes on these new system as that new added drive is always first on boot).

-edit 2-

Didn't notice it hangs on 'detect array'.. Disable 'Legacy Support' if there is such and check what drive options is on bios. Also as it's old UDMA 5 channel HD it might take up to 90-120 Seconds until it regonizes as like USB not legacy supported IDEs does. (Yeah I know 1-2 mins is long time to wait and it will do it twice after that even on system start but you get then normal system). However check if waiting works. 1-2 mins ain't forever.
