GPU sales strong as AMD gains market share
...
JPR's report also includes some market share figures. AMD now has 20.6% of the overall GPU market by the research firm's count, while Nvidia holds 27.8%, and Intel has nearly half (49.4%). Those same three firms had respective 18.1%, 31.4%, and 47.3% market shares in the second quarter and 20.5%, 36.4%, and 33.4% shares in Q3 2007. Nvidia's piece of the pie sure seems to have shrunk dramatically.
Interestingly, market share numbers for the mobile market now show AMD with 20.8% and Nvidia with 21.8%, on nearly equal footing. In desktops, the two firms have 20.3% and 32.6% shares, respectively. |

ATI Begins to Fight Back Market Share from Nvidia in Desktop Discrete Market Segment.
Demand for Graphics Cards Increased in Q3 2008, Average Selling Prices Dropped Again – Research Firm
...
Jon Peddie Research notes that ATI/AMD has by all accounts exceeded expectations with its ATI Radeon HD 4000 series. The new graphics boards are priced aggressively, but still deliver solid performance, which allowed ATI to increase its share on the market of discrete desktop GPUs to 40% from 35% in the prior quarter. Nvidia and its partners did not want to surrender without a fight and had to drop the prices on the GeForce GTX 260 and 280 graphics cards, a move that not only affected ASPs for the quarter, but also reduced Nvidia’s profitability. |

| If you think Intel are dominating now, lets hope that the Larrabee is a pile of junk, otherwise both Nvidia and AMD might be supping from the bottom of the barrel... |

thing is though; intel might have the biggest market share, but it doesn't mean their gpu's are any good.
only reason they have the biggest market share is because of all the crappy laptops and oem machines that come with intel boards and intel integrated gpu's on them. ;o |

I'm quite sorry I didn't buy a laptop with an Intel GPU (X3100 or better), right now they have the best Linux (and open source) support. nVidia and AMD are doing better now (with same-day driver releases for Windows and Linux), but there are still some annoying bugs and missing features. Like PowerPlay not working, which means my laptop only has about 1 hour (!) of battery life (and that's with an HD 2600, imagine that with a faster GPU...).
I don't game much, and don't do any video editing, so an Intel GPU for me would be good enough. |

Ditto, Intel on Linux just works OotB, no problems.
If your not a PC gamer, and if your a Linux user then onboard Intel is perfectly fine.
