At least Vista is stable, alas something that Me truly never was.
I think the problem with Vista, is that Microsoft have realised that they set the hardware requirements too high, and especially with the new wave of sub notebooks, low cost PC's and mobile devices with the memory capability for a 'full fat' OS, but obviously require lighter OS resources.
This is why Intel are recommending Linux for the Atom platform, as Vista will never be scalable enough for the job. MS just can't ignore platforms like this, and it's too embarrasing for them to rely on an 'old' OS like XP to do it either, and Windows Mobile is no match for a system running x86 Linux. |

That is just idiocy. ME didn't work right for 90% of the people who tried it. Vista doesn't work for less than .0001% of the people who try it.
Windows 7 will launch when it's ready, and finally make compatibility accessed entirely virtually. That should make things a lot less messy in Windows land.
I'm still hoping for a 'launch application in a window' option myself.

There that'll be a nice feature, WinFS should be pretty neat too, and long overdue.
As I said before, Intel's Atom notes a shift in the industry to cater for many different types of lower power devices whilst still maintaining x86 scalability/compatibility. It's the job of operating systems now to be just as flexible, scalable and compatible.
Plus Linux is getting stronger as a competitor too, especially in the virtualization sector.

| I doubt WinFS will be in there. I've seen no mention of it being. |

It has its days.
Gladly my Vista is no longer suffering from the BSOD at startup, after some barrage of updates.

I have to say Vista is so far the only OS upgrade I've done from MS that has not impressed me in any way.
I saw/felt the benefits of 95 over 3.1. 98SE over 95 and XP over 98SE.
Vista has been a very underwhelming experience. Some would say that due to me using Basic but at the end of the day except for full Aero and a few unessential apps its Vista. I dont think I'm the only one who thinks this.
I look forward to vesion 7. However, if its purely once again another warmed over XP/Vista variant there will be trouble unless MS can really work on the code, refine it, optimise it.

Greetings!
Reading the mainstream media this weekend, you'd believe that Bill Gates announced that Windows 7 will be released to retail in 2009. The only problem is, he didn't say anything of the sort. What Gates said merely confirmed what we've all known all along: that Windows 7 is being developed on a three-year timeframe.
First, the quote that started it all. It's perfect "Chairman"-speak because it doesn't really tell you anything, but it gets the press and blogosphere hot and bothered, and hey, free press is great. Are you ready for the quote that rocked the tech world, leading scores of publications to say that Windows 7 is coming in 2009 and that Microsoft has turned up the heat on its development plans? Prepare thyself:
"Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version [of Windows]," said Mr. Gates.
That's it.
In a world of tech reporting where one's memory apparently stretches back not to the great Longhorn reboot but instead no further than one's breakfast, Mr. Gates' totally vague comment morphs into a product launch announcement, at least once the blogosphere gets ahold of it.
Nevermind the fact that Mr. Gates has been wrong before about launch timeframes. Nevermind the fact that "the next year or so" does not equate to "next year," at least not in the English language. And nevermind that Microsoft's public relations wing says that Gates' comments do not indicate a change in the development process at Windows. The above quote is surely a sign that we'll see Windows 7 in retail in a year's time. (And if you believe that, I've got a patent on the semi-colon key I'll sell ya.) |
