Ray Tracing To Debut In DirectX 11

According to a confidential source, Microsoft has decided to switch to ray-tracing in DirectX 11. They also plan to have DirectX 11 ready in time to debut with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. To do that, they have also decided to base it on the x86 architecture and Intel's ray-tracing engine. There are rumours that Intel did more than just "suggest" it to Microsoft, but that's another story altogether.

As DirectX 11 is a work in progress, Microsoft does not have an exact timeline. But the source claims that DirectX 11 could be part of Windows Vista by late 2008. Development is expected to be very short as much of the work had already been done by Intel. Coincidence?

Sounds like someone has severely underestimated what Nvidia could do in that situation. Just because they don't do x86's, doesn't mean that they couldn't design one if needed for the job of RT, heck maybe even they could emulate the whole thing with a back end from the gods...

NVIDIA Acquires RayScale Software - Bringing Ray Tracing to the GPU

Sitting here at an NVIDIA meeting in San Jose, word just got passed to the world that NVIDIA will be announcing the acquisition of a ray tracing software company called RayScale.

This is an incredibly interesting move and clarifies more of NVIDIA's stance on merging traditional rasterization and ray tracing techniques, as we saw in our interview with David Kirk, NVIDIA's CTO.

Merging rasterization and ray-tracing I find a whole lot more believable than all this pie in the sky crap we've been hearing for over ten years.

Intel converts ET: Quake Wars to ray-tracing

Up until yesterday, Intel was showcasing its ray-tracing research using Quake 3 and Quake 4, which were nice demos, but did not exactly reflect fresh software. Over past several months, the company has been working one converting Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and we have to admit that the results are quite impressive.

Intel demonstrated ET: Quake Wars running in basic HD (720p) resolution, which is, according to our knowledge, the first time the company was able to render the game using a standard video resolution, instead of 1024 x 1024 or 512 x 512 pixels. Seeing ETQW running in 14-29 frames per second in 1280x720 has brought up our hopes for Intel's CPU architecture, since we do not believe that CPUs would deliver a similar performance when rasterizing graphics. For the record, the demonstration ran on a 16-core (4 socket, 4 core) Tigerton system running at 2.93 GHz.

Nvidia are starting to look like 3Dfx did when they said folks didnt want such radical features as 32bit colour.
