Plus a lot of newer LCD's have a 1:1 pixel ratio option also, so if you display a 1920x1080p image on a 1920x1200 screen you get small black bars at the top and bottom instead.

You could even display a 720p image in a perfect small box if you wished. In any case, the higher the resolution the monitor is, the better it should scale a lower resolution image in theory. I know in the Nvidia driver settings for example you can choose if you want to let the monitor scale resolution, or let the graphics card do it, play around with it both ways and see which looks best.
