Does anyone here have an AMD 2600XT card and uses the DVI to HDMI adapter to send both video and audio (2.0 or 5.1) to their TV?

I'm about to upgrade the X1600Pro card I have in my HTPC (not the PC listed in my sig) to a 2600XT. I was just wondering what connectors/cables I need to send audio output via the AMD HDMI adapter (which I believe can be done)?

I bought an OEM Auzentech Mystique 7.1 soundcard for my HTPC that didn't come with any cables so I'm worried I may be lacking something to make this possible.

Do AMD supply the necessary cables for this with the 2600XT? Or does it pick up the audio over the PCI/PCI-E bus?

If I'm not mistaken there should be a two pin digital connection on the card itself, which you just connect a normal internal two pin digital audio lead to (coming from your audio card/motherboard).

This is how it was on a review I read of a 8600GTS HDMI that I saw the other day, it should be similar on the 2600XT.

Thanks for your reply.

After posting my original question I strayed onto the Sapphire site and for their 2600XT they seem to suggest that it picks the sound up over the PCI-E/PCI bus.

Although I'm predominantly an nVidia man, I'm more interested in a 2600XT for my HTPC purposes than a 8600 card do to the formers superior HD processing capabilities and lower CPU load.

Actually you probably made the right decision anyway, Nvidia seems to have been cheating on video quality tests :-

noooo noooo nooooo!

The Radeon HD 2600XT actually has a 7.1 (AC3) surround sound card built onto the graphics card.

If you got the model that had the DVI to HDMI adapter supplied, then this should suffice. Install the latest drivers and away you go....

If you didn't, then good luck: they only seem to be availble from the US Sad And most Euro spec bundles do NOT include it (and cost more!).

Some nVidia cards mimmick this by promising surround sound over HDMI, they do, but only via a an SPDIF IN that has to come from a separate sound card and then that's mixed with the video to provide an "audio and video over HDMI" solution.

I've not yet got round to buying a hdmi capable 2600XT and just thought I'd check back on this thread first.

LostBok: your post intrigues me - do you have first had experience of the adapter issues?

I was thinking of buying one of these cards:

Probably the last one as it's silent.

apols for the huge delay - yes, I've been having these problems myself....

on my first install of XP, it worked 100%, on installing Vista64, it worked properly... I re-installed Vista64 and it stopped working...

I've since given up and got got a £20 X-FI PCI-E card to do the job, which hopefully I'll be able to remove once ATI sort out a proper driver pack for their onboard (Realtek) AC£ sound card... until then, it's only one extra fibre-optic line ot the amp, so no real harm done.

Interesting article! To be honest I noticed just a few days ago that my Hercules 8500 128mb with a Rage Theatre chip on it, produces better picture quality than my Geforce 8600GTS with PureVideo!

That article is a bit old now, and I wouldn't be suprised if that issue is sorted now. I actually think the video quality of my 8600GTS is very nice indeed with the latest drivers on Vista.
