You may have read by now that the first public alpha of Kestrel is planned for next Tuesday, September 4th. Since there's still a couple days before then, we wanted to tell you a bit more about what to expect from Kestrel. Kestrel is the product of over a year of development, which began in our code repository on June 20, 2006. Since then, we've developed several major new features, fixed thousands of bugs, and made Opera the best it's ever been.

We've been dropping bits of information about Kestrel for several months now and it's time to reveal some more about this release. Users have suggested many new features and we're happy to be able to deliver some of them this time around. In Kestrel, we focused on five things: performance, site compatibility, accessibility, OS integration, and Opera Mail.

Plenty more details in the post...

It's fast!! Easily the fastest version of Opera since 6.x/7.x (and that's saying a lot), and it's still alpha... Can't wait for the final version.

Fasten your seatbelts, and get ready to test drive Kestrel yourself. After more than a year of development, we invite you to test Opera 9.5 alpha and tell us what you think about it.
In short, Opera 9.5 alpha is:

Performance

Full history search

Improved site compatibility

Access for everyone

Improved platform integration

Preview of bookmark and Speed Dial synchronization

Magic Windows build number

And much more! Take a look at the huge changelogs to see what is new:
Windows
Mac
UNIX

Don't forget to report bugs, but check the Known Issues list in the changelogs and discuss them in the Beta Testing forum, in the opera.beta newsgroup, or in #weekly first.

And now: go and get it! We recommend that you make a clean install and copy over your profile data (but not your preferences file) if you'd like to test the upgrade procedure. You may not be able to downgrade if you upgrade an existing install!

Stay tuned for more updates and builds on the Desktop Team blog.

Just tried it on an ancient P266 machine...

Agreed, very fast... Wink

In fact Opera is the only usable modern browser on this machine, which tells you something about it's speed... Wink

This is a preview release of the upcoming Opera 9.5. For your everyday browsing, you should use Opera 9.23. But if you got this far, our little warning won't stop you...

Damn right it won't Smile
