Greetings!

In this article we'll go through the entire process of setting up a virtual machine. You'll learn what software is required, what hardware should be used and, as a companion to the three-part article, why it is desirable to do so.

I did this on my Gf's PC to let her have a Linux 'box' running for testing her websites on etc.

Worked brilliantly, most impressed, err even if she wasnt...at all. Rolling Eyes

Anyway she got some qudos at work a few weeks ago when the tech guys where she works got all excited about trying it at work. She mentioned casually that she already had one and they were stunned that she had ever heard of it.

Typical tech guys. Laughing

Like the article says, it's nicer to run a VM from a Linux distro as it generally runs/performs better overall IMO.

I've got Windows 98SE running as one of my VM's at the moment, great for some of the older games... Wink

Application Virtualization

In preparation for this article, we set out to find a simple definition of application virtualization. All we wanted was a simple and concise introductory sentence to give our readers a good idea of what application virtualization is all about, independent of the meanings given by the existing software vendors that tout the advantages of application virtualization.

The search turned out to be rather difficult, as it seems the different companies pursuing the technology are defining what it means. It is not our intention to declare a "winning technology" in this article; the fact is that all the products we'll have a look at have a slightly different focus. Instead, the goal is to provide an objective view of the technology's current possibilities for the IT market.

VMworld Europe 2008 Coverage
...
Virtualization has come a very long way in the past couple of years, and VMware's efforts to push this technology into every segment of the business IT world has encouraged many companies to start experimenting with it. Thanks to that, many new ways have been discovered to integrate virtualization in a way that makes the environment even more flexible, and some of those interesting new takes were displayed at VMworld. In this article, we've bundled together coverage of some of the items we saw, summarized here:

* IBM breaks a Microsoft Exchange performance record with the use of ESX
* BEA rocking the Java world with LiquidVM
* Parallels offering their own take on virtualization with a suite of products for several platforms
* Richard McDougall offers some insights on running databases in a virtualized environment

We've tried to cover as many bases as possible, but the vast amount of subjects made complete coverage impossible. Definitely check out Johan's IT blogs and article for his experiences, though. Now let's take a closer look at the above items.

I'm currently running a VirtualBox VM (Windows XP) under Fedora 8, it feels a lot faster than Windows Vista native on the same box!

VirtualBox is pretty nice, it runs fast, supports a lot of OSes (both guest and hosts), and doesn't need VT-x/AMD-V/whatever extensions to run well. And it's open source, altough Sun bought the company, and started to offer two "editions" of the software.
