New here... would appreciate any help i can get. Comcast has basically told me my [Eartha Kitt]'s wacked out, which I know isnt true... plz help:

prior to yesterday, I have used my computer at college for the last couple years. I just moved back home, and now I cannot connect to the internet via wireless, wired (routed), or wired (direct connection to modem).

However, upon installing a new ethernet card, I can gain internet access instantly.

...soooo, either BOTH my wireless USB device AND my motherboard ethernet port broke at the exacty same time, or there is an issue with my nVidia nforce Networking Controller (i think). I'm pretty sure both devices didnt break at the same time, as this has ridiculous odds of occurring.

here's what happens:

upon connecting the ethernet cord/wireless adapter, i get a local i.p. address: 169.254.---.---
repairing/releasing/renewing doesnt fix this.

if i disable then enable the driver in device manager, then i'll get a 192.168.101.1
address. However, I still have only limited or local access. Restarting the modem, computer, router, etc. does nothing.

connecting the pc directly to the modem also does nothing.

like i said, since both the wireless usb and the ethernet port both are configured to the same nforce networking controller, i'm assumin something is wrong with this...

i'm stuck.

Hi
The one that's not working, is it set to static ip address and dns? If so set it to dynamic and then release/renew and see if it comes around.

Blaming NV may seem likely, but in reality there could be a lot more behind the scenes. I've seen a lot of USB wireless cards with [pee] poor drivers that like to break things...

Anyway, since theres no way to configure a wireless USB card to a wired controller, I have no idea what you're talking about there.

both are set to "obtain an ip address automatically" and "obtain dns server address automatically", respectively.

Sometimes onboard ethernet ports die, yours might have. Can you test it on another connection? As well, usb networking is poor at best, I avoid it at all cost.
Does device manager say anything bad about the port? Such as it's disabled or anything?

yes, sometimes they will quit on ya, but for both the onboard ethernet port and the usb wireless to die at the exact same time is not-so-believable...

i tested the usb wireless card and it works on a different computer.

device manager looks all good... everything enabled and working well.

is there anyway to completely uninstall the nforce drivers and then install them fresh again?
if i uninstall from device manager, then they will automatically install again right after

I would look in add/remove programs and in there you'll see nvid drivers listed. You should be able to pick what you'd like to remove.

Does your isp enforce use of a specific mac address? I know some cable isps like Charter here does. If you use anything but that specific mac addy you get no interweb. Perhaps that's the case?
