Solved - "This file came from another computer and migh

Postby wardog » Sat Apr 07, 2007 1:52 am

WTF?

I'm now seeing "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer"
warnings on files here when I look at the files "Properties" page. Also, I'll see the Windows warning upon
first executing the file.

In Googling it today I see it's related to "Named Data Streams' and the NTFS file system but for the life of
me I can't determine where to disable the "notification' or at least keep NTFS and Windows from marking
them "Blocked'

I've found the Sysinternals STREAMS Util but this doesn't/won't apply to the next file(s) I d/l.

Anyone here aware of what I can do to stop the file system from reading/attaching this stream? It created
quite the problem today here in attempting to install a program that was marked as such.

Somewhere in IE or the Registry there HAS to be a place to supress this.

Help  I'm stumped.

run gpedit.msc
Goto: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Attachment Manager
Enable: Do not preserve zone information in file attachments

Will only take effect on new files.

The above method will take care of it on a continual day in day out basis but is considered not secure and caution should be heeded before making this change. Meaning every file assigned zone info will be affected.

To accomplish the same on a file by file basis, while maintaing some semblence of security, the file only needs to be downloaded to or moved onto a FAT32 drive or partition and then back onto a NTFS drive or partition. FAT32 does not store zone info.

That doesn't remove the stream, or Zone properties. It will still carry with it these properties in doing
as you suggest. After renaming it it will still be "Blocked' according the "File Properties' page.

After renaming it back to its proper extension you'd find no change.

Edit: That and if the file is compressed of many files, upon extraction each file contained within
will carry with it this "Blocked' attribute.
