I'm looking into getting a copy of Vista but I'm not sure which one to get. All I use my PC for is gaming. I'm a big power user though, of course, and like to tweak my PC at all possible. I know XP Home sucked for tweaking so I'm just wondering if Vista is going to be the same. I don't care for the media and business additions so I'm looking at the Ultimate or Home Editions I guess. Thanks for any input.

Np, mind you if you want my advice you might as well bite the bullet and get Ultimate, I have two machines now running Ultimate x64 and I don't regret it one bit.
I hate feeling like I'm missing something in an OS, no matter how silly it is sometimes... |

| Myself I still feel like I'd have been fine with Premium. |

Looking it up, if you want a PC for just pure gaming then the Home Basic would do the trick just dandy. Cheap and doesnt come with all the other bloat.
Get the Premium or Ultimate for the Media PC or laptop.
The big question for me is 32 or 64bit?
A lot of the reviews have been saying stick with 32bit versions as 64bit adoption still wont catch on for some time yet, maybe till the next MS OS.

I am inclined to agree. Kind of sad not to get Aero, though -even if I ended up disabling it.

I would get the Premium if I used any of the media handling tools Microsoft puts in XP. I dont.

For 2007/2GBRAM, 32bits.
2008/4GB, probably 64bits.
Question to Vista users:
Has the ClearType... "feature" the capability of being fully disabled? |

Well if you buy the 32bit version your effectively stuck at 2GB, when you put more ram than that in a 32bit system it can only allocate up to the 4GB physical/virtual limit, so depending on your page file settings you'll only see 2.75GB or 3GB'ish even if you put 4GB of ram in there.
So the question is, how long will 2 or 3GB of ram last for until it starts to become a hinderance..?
Obviously not for a good while yet, but would you be happy buying a 32bit Vista now, and then upgrade to the 64bit version..?, or would you rather just be done with it and buy the 64bit version now..?
Tbh, there's hardly anything now that you can't run on Vista x64 that you can on Vista x86, it's all about the drivers. Do you hardware/peripherals have 64bit drivers..?, if yes then there is no reason not to get the 64bit version IMHO, it's more futureproof, and when more 64bit apps arrive it will be faster too. (IMO it's just faster anyway, even for general desktop use)

Having Aero enabled doesn't affect your gaming either:-

Yes, but to put it blunty, it looks crap...
(I tried it the other day...)
ClearType in Vista looks better than ClearType in XP, the reason being is because as the whole GDI is GPU accelerated, it makes the text look better.
Hmm...7000..?
