I think nvidia would be completely crazy to pull something like this, to release a a new architechture two months after it introduces the G71 (out in march). There wouldn't be time for the G71 to sells enough units to pay for its development, I believe... |

ATI did similar with the X1900XT/X did they not..?
Why couldn't Nvidia have separate teams on G71 and G80..? |

Sure, it could be done, but I think this would be crazy for them to pull of on a monetary sense, to launch two new architectures so closely. Something that could make them pull off something like this would be ATI releasing a video card line that performed a lot better than their cards, as it happened with the 9700 / FX cards.
I think the X1800-X1900 is different, as it is a refresh from the same architecture, on the same process, and would cost a lot less to develop, test and release. A similar release of a refresh of the same architecture is the release of the 7900 line by nvidia.
IMHO, it would make a lot more sense for nvidia to launch a new line by the end of the year, by october or november, in time for the holiday season and for the Vista launch. |

I can't wait to see some dual core cards on the mainstream, perhaps cheap enough for me to buy one |

With ATI, it was mainly due to poor production and late arrival of the X1800, that caused the X1900 to be released so soon after the hard launch of the X1800. Basically, they where releasing the X1900 on time. For nV to launch G71 and then follow up with G80 right after it, just doesn't make any business sense...especially when your only competitor, is not much competition right now.
The only reason I could see for such an early launch of a product like that is if there was some software or something coming out at a similar time that would work very well on the new architecture and nV wanted to make sure they were there to show it off. Or, like already mentioned, if they happened to think ATI was releasing something great at by that time, but I doubt that is the case.
As usual, time will tell I guess. |
