I bought a XFX 6600GT AGP in mid december, it came with the "improved heatsink" as well. It worked well for a week or so, until I started getting horrible slowdowns in games, severe image corruption and finally lockups.
So I checked the temps on the card via the nVidia panel, and I was surprised to see 70-80°C idle and up to 115°C while playing any game. I opened up the case hoping it would lower the GPU temp, but temps went down only a coupe degrees, even being in an air conditined room. The "Ambient Temperature" sensor was not working, as it said "unavailable".
The card finally fried and I sent it back to XFX for replacement. A couple weeks later I got my "new" card, and it has the nVidia reference heatsink on, which is much quieter and looks nicer. With this card temp are ~50°C idle, and go up to ~80°C under load (It's summer here, room temp during the day is around 35-40°C).
I did some research regarding 6600GT cooling issues, and seems there is a major design flaw in how the heatsink is attached to the GPU. There are a lot, A LOT of people reporting fried 6600GT cards of all brans, but mostly XFX (maybe because XFX's are the most popular).
Take a look at the card sideways, and you'll probably notice that the heatsink is not making full contact with the GPU. I recommend you to request an RMA, and check the replacement card for the same defect before installing it. After installing it, monitor temperatures for a couple of days to check it works as it should.
