Greetings!
"... Google appears to be planning to launch its own Web browser and other software products to challenge Microsoft."
in, http://www.nypost.com/business/30438.htm
Competing with Micrsoft is a good thing, but the way we are hooked to Google is a bit scary...
Thread renamed to "What is Google up to?" from "Google Browser"
Moved from Cantina to Software

...seems kind of silly. What expertise do they have in web browsers? Google seems like a company trying to be too big for its britches. Where does their revenue come from? All advertising? They are expanding like Walmart without a very sound plan. Do we really need another web browser?
Actually they have quite an extensive Corporate Information page on their site. I'm impressed. Still doesn't sound like a good idea though.

2. It's best to do one thing really, really well.
Google does search. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat. With the largest research group in the world focused exclusively on solving search problems, Google knows what it does well and how it could be done better. Through continued iteration on difficult problems, Google has been able to solve complex issues that stymie others and provide continuous improvements to a service already considered the best on the web. Innovations like Google's spell checker and the Google Toolbar, which enables users to search using Google from any website, make finding information a fast and seamless experience for millions of users. Google's entire staff is dedicated to creating the perfect search engine and work tirelessly toward that goal. |

I heard they hired a bunch of people from Microsoft's Longhorn GUI team as well as some of their Browser people and some people from Sun. Of course they may not have been good or useful people at their previous jobs. But with >1Billion dollars in cash on hand I'd say Google can buy any expertise they need to make it work.
And with no browser updates for any IE versions outside of XP. It could be appealing for people still using 98/ME/2000.
It'll be interesting to watch. I'll stick with Mozilla until something better comes along. |

Once Microsoft got to a dominant market share all of a sudden they became "the enemy".
Google may find itself heading in that direction.......which will give Bill's crew a break.
Perhaps Google should stick to it's area of expertise.
Besides, if they are hiring staff from Microsoft we may just end up with IE with a different interface and same holes.
At least Firefox is different enough to be a truly unique browser and a viable competitor.
Just my tuppence worth. |

Have you considered the possibility that they might use the gecko (Mozilla) engine? The license permits it, as long as a few ifs and buts are adhered to. |
