HDA/Azalia Front Panel?

Postby ExoditeSE » Wed Oct 11, 2006 1:35 am

I've got my C2D rig set up and comfortable now, mostly anyway, unfortunatly I've bumped into another problem.

I still can't make good use of the front panel audio connector since it seems some overenthusiastic person, who have a very hot spot in hell reserved for them, decided that HDA and AC'97 shouldn't use the same cabling.

As it is I can either enable Front Panel Audio detection and get sound in both my headset and speakers as the detection doesn't work correctly with the cabling being AC'97 rather than HDA or disable Front Panel Audio detection for AC'97 compatability/detection and get sound from both my speakers and headset as muting isn't available under AC'97 compatability mode.

I cannot, under any cicumstance, plug in my headset in the front audio panel and have the back panel speakers muted.

My question would be if anyone is aware of any ATX case available with HDA cabling? Or if the cabling is interchangable enough that you could simply replace the cable between motherboard connector and front panel connector and have it work?

I'd appreciate any input on this, google didn't turn up much on the issue and Antec replied that they have none in the works currently. Or none they could speak of anyway. *shrug*

Obviously I can still manually mute the speakers but that's more inconvenient in my current setup and not the preferred solution.

Greetings!

What does the motherboard manual says?

Basicly that if you don't have a case with explicit support for HD audio for the front panel you have to set the software, Realtek HD Audio Panel in my case, to "Disable Front Audio Detection" to run it in AC'97 compatability mode.

If I do it correctly detects that my headset, both mic and speakers, are plugged in but I don't get the option to mute the back panel.

That option is only available in the default, HD, mode.

Some googling turned up a page at Intel that shows that, indeed, the pinouts for the AC'97 and HD front panel aren't the same.

I'm a bit peeved about this since I've been lamenting the fact that using my Audigy 2ZS card with my other rig prohibited me from using the front panel audio connector as Creative doesn't support anything but their own drive bays and now it turns out I'm still out of luck. *sigh*

similar problem with no solution yet

Postby tripleb » Sun Jul 22, 2007 3:19 am

I have a Lian Li V1200B Plus II case and my Realtek HDA drivers don't like it. It is definitely a similar problem where I cannot mute the rear panel when the front panel has my head phones and mic connected.

Though, Realtek does not detect my jacks when I plug them into the front panel.

I read somewhere that this might be a mapping problem between the case and the HDA motherboard, but there has yet to be a solution.

There was a question about is there an enclosure with HDA and AC97 calbes. Yes, I just purchased a CoolerMaster CM690 that has both.

The pain of Azalia front panel wiring

Postby Ned_lad » Thu Jun 05, 2008 3:18 pm

http://www.formfactors.org/developer/sp ... 04-005.pdf contains the Intel manual that makes all clear. Figure 6 shows the required circuit for front panel connection. Figure 4 shows the old AC 97 digram. There are 4 extra connections to be made in HD audio as the diagrams show. Mobo header pinouts are compatible with AC97 pinouts. The problem with this circuit is finding 1/8 or 3.5 mm jack sockest that have auxiliary contatcs that make on jack plug insertion. However, the same effect can be achieved with a slider switch
